  • Goedhuis, February 2024

This low-yielding vineyard north of Margaret River produces one of the region’s most complex Chardonnays from the famed Gingin clone. A delightfully delicate nose of citrus oil, fresh pastry, and almonds, the palate is not too dissimilar to that of a Chassagne, with its generosity of fruit and masterful use of oak, while there are subtle hints of the vineyard’s maritime influence with a flintiness, almost sea-spray character that keeps the finish feeling fresh.

  • Wine Advocate, July 2023, Score: 94+

The 2022 Gingin Willows Vineyard Chardonnay is pretty, with custard apple, donut peach, cinnamon, croissant, vanilla pod and almond meal in profusion. It's like a feather pillow—soft, sinking, soft. In the mouth, the acid pulls it firmly back onto the rails and imbues it with a backbone. What a pretty thing this is. It is so plump, but structured and fine. It has a shells and spray sort of character. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2023-2032.

  • Matthew Jukes, April 2024, Score: 19+

If I tell you this is the finest value Chardonnay of the year, I hope this grabs your attention. The vine age, the unique Gingin Chardonnay clone (which adores the Margaret River region, performing at the peak of its powers in this wine), the stellar quality oak (60% new French and 40% one-year-old), the dynamic alcohol level of only 13.7%, and with only 10% of this wine going through malolactic fermentation, the acid profile is gripping – these stats add up to a stunning recipe for a world-class Chardonnay, but none of these tells you what it tastes like! Again, cutting to the chase, this wine shows all of the tenderness of Chassagne-Montrachets from Niellon, the brittle tension of the finest Dauvissat Chablis and the expansive luxury of a Lafon Meursault. But it is none of these things – this can only be a wine from the very highest echelons of the most exciting Chardonnay regions on earth, Margaret River. And while one is spoilt for choice when it comes to picking out gems from this part of the world, no one manages to make wines of this detail and deliciousness, coupled with extreme value for money, like Larry. You must dive into this beautiful wine. Drink now - 2028.

Region

Margaret River

Certainly the best wine area in Western Australia, if not the whole country. The idyllic scenery of Margaret River (surf-lapped rocky coast, towering karri forest, abundant wildlife) has only been home to wine production since the 1970s. Hard to believe given the quality of the Chardonnays and Cabernets produced by the likes of Leeuwin, Cullen, Moss Wood and Vasse Felix. Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon all also thrive here. The climate is mild, tempered by the Indian Ocean and the drying wind known as the Freemantle Doctor, and infertile red loam soils are the most sought after for viticulture.
