  • William Kelley, August 2024

There is no better feeling than unearthing a little-known gem that significantly over-delivers on quality and sheer deliciousness in the glass. That’s exactly the sensation this wine imparted when we discovered it recently. Although not yet classified as a Grosses Gewächs (Grand Cru), all of the fruit for this ‘Village’ wine comes from a Grosses Gewächs vineyard – this is a Grand Cru in all but name. An ultimate perfectionist, Ernst Loosen won’t designate this wine as a Grosses Gewächs until the vines have reached the age that he considers necessary at this quality level. So, for the next five years, the Graacher Village will continue to fly under the radar and deliver exceptional value for money. Packed with bright lemon and Granny Smith apple notes on the nose, the palate is dense and concentrated with flavours of pithy citrus fruit and fuzzy apricots. Fresh, crystalline acidity and a hint of saline minerality keeps everything in balance, leading to a poised, refined finish.

Worldly, dynamic and charismatic, Ernst Loosen is an undeniable character. He has been at the helm of his 200-year-old family domaine since 1988. With his initiative and savoir faire, over the years he has helped re-establish the Mosel on a wider scale as one of the most exciting wine growing areas in the world. Its terroir is exceptional, composed primarily of grey-blue and red slate that climb up to tremendously steep cliffs - the steepest in the world to be exact. Due to the Middle Mosel's lack of actual soil and incredibly good drainage, most of the vines are not grafted onto American rootstocks as phylloxera cannot survive. As a result, the vines grow exceptionally slowly creating wines that tend to be wonderfully pure, tender and focused. Ernst's holdings are in the some of the most reputable vineyards.Read less
