William Kelley, August 2024
An expressive and inviting Pinot Noir that speaks of the weathered-slate Herrenberg vineyard. A smokey, mineral-laden base note supports and enhances sumptuous aromas of ripe red cherry and dried cranberry, while an overlay of cocoa and nutmeg from judicious oaking in new barrels adds complexity and depth. Dense yet poised on the palate, the tannins are finely grained and ensure a long and detailed finish.
Region
Ahr Valley
Lying immediately north of the Mosel, Ahr is one of Germany’s smallest winegrowing regions; all 562 hectares of vineyards can be found along a 24km stretch of the river Ahr, a tributary of the Rhine. While neighbouring regions Mosel and Mittelrhein specialise in making white wines, the Ahr belies its northerly location by primarily producing reds, the majority of which are made from Pinot Noir (known locally as Spätburgunder). Thanks to its uniquely warm microclimate, which receives copious amounts of sunshine, the grapes have all the essentials for ripening fully, resulting in red wines with wonderful concentration of fruit and supple tannins. Here, the vines are grown on dramatically steep south-facing slopes and rugged crevices, which often prove difficult for the winemakers to tend to, however, the hard work is worth the vigneron’s while as the Ahr is home to some of the country’s finest red wines. While most of Ahr’s Spätburgunders are soft and light in style, renowned family estate Stodden produces red wines with more body and structure, which are as complex and as age-worthy as some of the Cotes de Nuits’ greatest Pinot Noirs.
