The soil of Le Clos is a mix of clay below and limestone above, and the wine is made in 100% new wood – yet I can barely discern it at all on the nose. A little deeper in colour. Quite discreet at the first then builds extremely well on the palate, with a perfumed but not muscatty note at the back. Elegance and intensity with a really lovely finish. 14% alcohol, bottled in December 2023. Drink from 2027-2035.

  • William Kelley, September 2024

An extraordinary walled monopole vineyard that has formed part of the Chateau since the 15th century, covering 2.7 hectares. This easterly exposed vineyard sitting at an altitude of 295 metres has three different soil compositions, mixing clay, brown marl and white flinty Bathonian limestone, with its vineyards averaging 40 – 90 years of age, the oldest of which were planted by Antoine’s grandfather in 1929. The depth and quality of the fruit coming from this vineyard allows for classic 100% barrel vinification, with a high proportion of new oak. Golden straw colour, this wine exudes confidence, with aromas of warm brioche and almonds. Powerfully intense, it has all the density and concentration of a great wine, building on the palate as the depth of creamy texture and notes of fresh spice coat the palate. So, so long on the finish, this is White Burgundy at its absolute best!

The majority of the estate's 30 hectares of vineyards are located in the districts of FUISSÉ and POUILLY, halfway up the hillsides with a south-south-easterly aspect. The soil with its variable proportions of clay and chalk give the wines both structure and elegance. The vines are cared for using traditional methods and are harvested separately and manually according to "climat" (plot). Vinification is carefully adapted, according to the parcel from which it is produced. Following fermentation, the wines are left on lees for a period of nine-months, then drawn off and blended, taking account of the complementary characteristics of each parcel, then slightly filtered.Read less

Region

Pouilly-Fuissé

At the southern tip of the Mâconnais lies Pouilly Fuisse - one of a group of five villages amid rolling limestone hills producing the most serious white wines in the area. At their best this is serious Chardonnay indeed, golden, rich and ripe. There is no hierarchy of wines in Pouilly Fuisse, but the appellation name may be followed by the name of a specific vineyard.
