  • Neal Martin, April 2024, Score: 93-95

The 2023 Berliquet was picked 23 September to October 5 at 45hL/ha, matured in 34% new oak plus 10 amphorae. Initially, the nose is quite backward and doesn't want to play. Give it a few swirls and it opens to reveal black cherries, blackcurrant and a distant tang of oyster shell emanating from limestone soils. The palate is medium-bodied with a very harmonious entry. Finely weighted, tensile and slightly savory in style, this is very elegant, finishing with citrus-like freshness. Berliquet has definitely been in the ascendant in recent vintages, and this is another to add. Drink 2028 - 2050. 93 - 95 points. Neal Martin, Vinous

  • Antonio Galloni, April 2024, Score: 91-93

The 2023 Berliquet marks another important step forward for this château. Floral aromatics are immediately alluring. Bright, sculpted fruit and vibrant acids convey finesse through to the saline, delineated finish. This is the first vintage made in the new cellar, which surely helps. Élevage is in French oak and amphora. Berliquet is all charm in 2023. Tasted four times. Drink 2027-2043.

  • Wine Advocate, April 2024, Score: 93-95

The 2023 Berliquet is the first vintage produced in the estate's new winery, equipped with double the number of vats, permitting proper separation of blocks. That's especially important, as Berliquet is a more diverse terroir than Canon, and it can now be interpreted with much more precision. Offering up aromas of cherries, black raspberries, licorice and violets, it's medium to full-bodied, pillowy and layered, with a fleshy core of concentrated fruit, refined, chalky tannins and lively acids. 93 - 95 points. William Kelley, Wine Advocate

  • James Suckling, April 2024, Score: 94-95

A plump and juicy wine with redcurrants and plums, as well as orange peel. Full and layered with round, juicy tannins and a flavorful finish. Generous fruit in this vintage.

  • William Kelley, April 2024, Score: 95-97

Ch Berliquet is set to be the bargain of St Emilion, with a quality which competes with the very best. It shows the strength of its location by combining fruit from the higher slopes of appellation’s famous limestone plateau with clay and sand dominant parcels lower down the hillside. A lilac and blueberry scent precede delicious, rich fruit on the palate, unctuous and subtly opulent. It just keeps giving right through to the finish. Every component is kept perfectly in check by the poise of the clay tannins, which provide a filigree of sophistication to what is one of the most beautiful wines from the right bank.

Producer

Château Berliquet

This overlooked château was purchased by the Wertheimer brothers of Chanel in August 2017, who also own neighbouring Ch Canon as well as Margaux property Ch Rauzan Ségla. The team at Ch Canon are undertaking major changes in the vineyard and cellar, and this 10 hectare estate’s future looks bright.

Region

St Emilion

South of Pomerol lies the medieval, perched village of St Emilion. Surrounding St Emilion are vines that produce round, rich and often hedonistic wines. Despite a myriad of soil types, two main ones dominate - the gravelly, limestone slopes that delve down to the valley from the plateau and the valley itself which is comprised of limestone, gravel, clay and sand. Despite St Emilion's popularity today, it was not until the 1980s to early 1990s that attention was brought to this region. Robert Parker, the famous wine critic, began reviewing their Merlot-dominated wines and giving them hefty scores. The rest is history as they say. Similar to the Médoc, there is a classification system in place which dates from 1955 and outlines several levels of quality. These include its regional appellation of St Emilion, St Emilion Grand Cru, St Emilion Grand Cru Classé and St Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classé, which is further divided into "A" (Ausone and Cheval Blanc) and "B" (including Angélus, Canon, Figeac and a handful of others). To ensure better accuracy, the classification is redone every 10 years enabling certain châteaux to be upgraded or downgraded depending on on the quality of their more recent vintages.
