  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024

Made with the fruit from eight different parcels across the village of Gevrey, this cuvée benefits from a multitude of individual terroirs and as such provides a great snapshot of the village style. A charming nose of pretty redcurrant and red cherry fruit is given further depth by a delicate hint of violet and a twist of white pepper. The ripe, plush core of sweet summer berry fruit is sustained by a vibrant thread of acidity that brings energy and tension to the palate. Soft, silky tannins provide a deceptively gentle structure; there is a density here that will support time in bottle.

  • Burghound, January 2025, Score: 88-91

An expressive, cool and nuanced nose freely offers up its aromas of wild red currant, cherry and just enough earth influence to be persuasive that this is from Gevrey. The exceptionally supple, indeed even almost easy-going, flavors aren't particularly dense but they are refreshing and vibrant before tightening up on the youthfully austere, dusty and fairly firm but not hard finish. This could use better depth so a few years of forbearance should be helpful.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2024, Score: 88-91

An even crimson colour. The nose has a little more stuffing than the Chambolle, slightly softer and rounder, with typical strawberry notes. Tightens up a little further back on the palate, with a red fruit mix and fair persistence. Drink from 2028-2033.

Louis is the seventh generation of vignerons in Burgundy from a family who is mostly known for their Côte de Beaune wines such as Pommard and Volnay however, several Côte de Nuits appellations including Gevrey Chambertin were added to the repertoire in 1978. Many of these are parcels of extremely old vines, and the wines have a natural concentration and silky persistence. Today Louis vinifies and ages his wines in Chambolle Musigny in the same cellar as his other half, Ghislaine Barthod. In fact, it has been said that his influences have helped create the celestial beauties that have risen from her vineyards. Both are ably assisted by their son, Clément. He has been instrumental in Louis Boillot’s recent purchase of vineyards in Beaujolais, Moulin à Vent, where these skilled Burgundians bring their expertise to the Gamay grape.Read less

Region

Gevrey Chambertin

The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
