  • James Suckling, August 2024, Score: 100

Incredibly refined and precise, yet with Grand Canyon-like depths and layers, this incredible dry riesling has a horizon-to-horizon spectrum of stone fruit, citrus and wild berry aromas, plus a touch of dusty hot soil as rain starts to fall on it. On the compact, medium-bodied palate, this side of the wine builds and builds to a giant crescendo in the almost endless finish. Drink or hold.

  • Jancis Robinson, September 2024, Score: 18.5

Smells of sweet water, jasmine tea, white blossom, tender greens and ripe fruit. A Jenga game of delicate acidity, piercing freshness, shimmering fruit, elegant phenolics and stony tension. Remove one piece and the whole tower falls. This is pure, refined elegance. Everything feels made from spun gold.

  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, July 2024

As the grand cru site that has been revered as Nahe’s finest vineyard for over 100 years, the ‘Hermann’ of Hermannshöhle is nothing but apt, deriving as it does from ‘Hermes’, the Roman god of travellers, and hinting at the fact that this vineyard was once a place of worship. Producing such sensational Rieslings, it’s clear to see why wine lovers through the ages would have undertaken a pilgrimage to visit Hermannshöhle in person. The 2023 has a nose that’s loaded with exotic notes of dried mango, passionfruit, pineapple and perfectly-ripe white nectarines. Luscious and inviting, this is a wine of great depth and concentration with huge potential to develop, evolve and reveal ever more complex layers of flavour. The fresh, poised acidity brings a cut-glass brightness to a long and impressive finish. A highly classical Riesling, worthy of its illustrious origin.

Dönnhoff is one the best producers in all of Germany and the estate is arguably the most famous outside of the Mosel valley. The family domaine dates from 1750 and is comprised of 28-hectares in the Nahe, a region located southeast of the Mosel. Its climate unexpectedly evokes the Mediterranean, and its soils are comparable to the Mosel with the addition of clay, though not as steep. The combination of these 2 elements seems to give the best of both worlds - the focus and minerality of the Mosel as well as the fleshy fruit of Germany's warmer regions. The vines have been passed on from father to son to grandson and now the fourth generation holds the reins. Cornelius Dönnhoff took over from his father Helmut in 2007 after 8 years of training. Cornelius continues his father's natural (and perfectionsit) winemaking philiopshy, producing wines of extraordinary power, concentration and complexity. Spellbinding and thought-provoking, they are worth discovering.Read less

Nahe

Nahe is located to the south east of the Mosel. Its climate unexpectedly evokes the Mediterranean, and its slate soils are comparable to the Mosel with the addition of clay, though not as steep. The combination of these two elements seems to give the best of both worlds - the focus and minerality of the Mosel as well as the fleshy fruit of Germany's warmer regions.
