  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024

The fruit for this wine is sourced from two separate vineyards, one of which is Ez Echards; a well-positioned site, located just below the Premier Cru of Ronceret. Opening with lifted notes of raspberry and pomegranate, this is an attractive cuvée given an extra layer of complexity by an overlay of nutmeg spice and light oak toastiness. The plush, rounded fruit brings a lovely volume to the wine, which is gently framed by silky, mouth-coating tannins. A lift of bright, crystalline acidity and a lingering note of black pepper make for a classically styled finish to this Pinot.

  • Jasper Morris MW, October 2024, Score: 87-90

A blend of Echards and Petit Gamets. All destemmed, 10% new wood. Another fresh lively purple, with additional refinement in the bouquet, less obviously juicy. Dark raspberry. Close to blackberry fruit, medium volume in the mouth, attractive finish, adequate acidity.

Thibaud Clerget is the 28th generation of his family to make wines in and around Volnay. They have farmed here since 1268. And yet Domaine Clerget feels like a new name on the scene. Thibaud’s father Yvon retired in 2009 and between then and 2015 the fruit had been sold to a local négociant whilst son Thibaud travelled. He spent time in Oregon and New Zealand developing his winemaking skills and knowledge and then completed his apprenticeship with Charles Van Canneyt at Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat in Vougeot before finally returning to the family estate in 2015. He has inherited 6 hectares of superbly tended vineyards, the majority of which are in Volnay. He destems all his fruit and aims to make refined, naturally expressive wines.Read less

Region

Volnay

A red wine appellation only, wines from Volnay might be considered the most revered of southern Burgundy. They have been celebrated since the 18th century for their delicacy. But they are not fruit forward like those of Beaune or Chorey Lès Beaune nor have the brooding structure of Pommard.Instead, they have superb linearity, focus and poise while sheathed in velvety tannin. This slightly reticent personality comes out even more with a bit of age, though some can be approached very young. There are no grand cru vineyards in Volnay, but there are some excellent premier cru examples including Volnay Les Champans and Volnay Les Caillerets. Chardonnay grown in the shared Santenots vineyard must be labelled as Meursault.
