Cherubino | Superlative Margaret River Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon from Australia's Winery of the Year

We are delighted to offer two exceptional, limited release wines from this year’s Australian Winery of the Year, Cherubino: Ovale Willows Vineyard Wilyabrup Chardonnay 2022 at and Ovale Riversdale Vineyard Frankland River Cabernet Sauvignon 2018.

A viticultural megastar, Larry Cherubino has worked with some of the industry's biggest names and it is absolutely no surprise that his winery has been recognised in this way. As Matthew Jukes wrote this week, "I take my hat off to his dedication, perseverance, palate acumen and will to win."

It is with his eponymous label that Larry's winemaking prowess truly has room to flourish. From Margaret River to the regions of the Great Southern, the signature Cherubino range showcases the very best of Western Australia, with wines that sing of their origins.

  • Goedhuis, February 2024

This low-yielding vineyard north of Margaret River produces one of the region’s most complex Chardonnays from the famed Gingin clone. A delightfully delicate nose of citrus oil, fresh pastry, and almonds, the palate is not too dissimilar to that of a Chassagne, with its generosity of fruit and masterful use of oak, while there are subtle hints of the vineyard’s maritime influence with a flintiness, almost sea-spray character that keeps the finish feeling fresh.

The 2022 Gingin Willows Vineyard Chardonnay is pretty, with custard apple, donut peach, cinnamon, croissant, vanilla pod and almond meal in profusion. It's like a feather pillow—soft, sinking, soft. In the mouth, the acid pulls it firmly back onto the rails and imbues it with a backbone. What a pretty thing this is. It is so plump, but structured and fine. It has a shells and spray sort of character. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2023-2032.

  • Matthew Jukes, April 2024, Score: 19+

If I tell you this is the finest value Chardonnay of the year, I hope this grabs your attention. The vine age, the unique Gingin Chardonnay clone (which adores the Margaret River region, performing at the peak of its powers in this wine), the stellar quality oak (60% new French and 40% one-year-old), the dynamic alcohol level of only 13.7%, and with only 10% of this wine going through malolactic fermentation, the acid profile is gripping – these stats add up to a stunning recipe for a world-class Chardonnay, but none of these tells you what it tastes like! Again, cutting to the chase, this wine shows all of the tenderness of Chassagne-Montrachets from Niellon, the brittle tension of the finest Dauvissat Chablis and the expansive luxury of a Lafon Meursault. But it is none of these things – this can only be a wine from the very highest echelons of the most exciting Chardonnay regions on earth, Margaret River. And while one is spoilt for choice when it comes to picking out gems from this part of the world, no one manages to make wines of this detail and deliciousness, coupled with extreme value for money, like Larry. You must dive into this beautiful wine. Drink now - 2028.

Found further inland, Frankland River wines are the product of their more continental climate. With a beautiful fragrance on the nose, combining violets, blackcurrant, and cracked black pepper, the palate is opulent, while a lovely zip of acidity keeps the wine on its toes. Made from heritage clones, with 3 years spent slumbering in oak, the slatey mineral edge is tempered by silk-soft tannins and a vibrancy. This will age gracefully for years to come. Drink 2023-2035.

Blackcurrants, crushed stone, and oyster shell with some seaweed aromas and flavors. Hints of tar. Medium body, fine and caressing tannins. Delicious finish. So drinkable now but will age beautifully. Screw cap.

  • Matthew Jukes, September 2023

2018 Cherubino Ovale Clonal Selection Cabernet Sauvignon Riversdale Vineyard exhibits far more style and grace than it ought to at this price. With a beautiful volume of cassis fruit, and skin tannins that rake the palate rhythmically as they glide by, this is a stellar creation. If you love Napa or Bolgheri Cabs, this will seem super-elegant by comparison, given it is not oak-soaked, and in terms of value, it soars above any examples I can think of from both regions.
