2023 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Les Champonnets Louis Boillot
£204.00 In Bond-
Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024
As a Premier Cru, Les Champonnets enjoys an enviable position, sitting between Gevrey’s Grands Crus and the lower slopes of Combe St Jacques. Boillot’s vines here are north facing and enjoy the cool breeze that flows down from the nearby valley. As such, this cuvée always exhibits a vibrant freshness and the 2023 is no exception. Showing bright notes of redcurrant and pomegranate, the nose is given further depth by a savoury whisp of white pepper. Ripe, succulent fruit is enlivened by sprightly, mouth-watering acidity whilst silken, yet structured tannins provide shape and poise. Finishing with a lift of pepper spice, this is a highly attractive wine that speaks of its place.

The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Champonnets 1er Cru has a detailed and mineral-driven bouquet that unfolds with glee. There's plenty of energy here. The palate is medium-bodied and very harmonious with grainy tannins. It's missing a little grip on the finish but it will give plenty of pleasure in its youth.

Burghound, January 2025, Score: 90-93
An elegant, pure and equally cool nose reflects notes of red cherry, dark raspberry and a very subtle hint of newly turned earth. The mouthfeel of the medium-bodied flavors is relatively supple, indeed unusually so for a Champonnets, while displaying excellent punch on the powerful and youthfully austere finale. This too could use better depth so a few years of keeping are in order. Overall, while I wouldn't describe this as a classic example of the vineyard, it is by contrast more refined than usual.

Fresh light ruby purple, a touch of sulphur on the nose, restraining the bouquet. This has an altogether firmer structure, quite tightly wound, and the fruit remains discreet. Fresh enough for sure, a wine of moderate density. Drink from 2029-2036.

2023 Gevrey Chambertin Louis Boillot
£240.00 In Bond £308.74 Inc VAT (£51.45 Per Bottle)-
Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024
Made with the fruit from eight different parcels across the village of Gevrey, this cuvée benefits from a multitude of individual terroirs and as such provides a great snapshot of the village style. A charming nose of pretty redcurrant and red cherry fruit is given further depth by a delicate hint of violet and a twist of white pepper. The ripe, plush core of sweet summer berry fruit is sustained by a vibrant thread of acidity that brings energy and tension to the palate. Soft, silky tannins provide a deceptively gentle structure; there is a density here that will support time in bottle.

Burghound, January 2025, Score: 88-91
An expressive, cool and nuanced nose freely offers up its aromas of wild red currant, cherry and just enough earth influence to be persuasive that this is from Gevrey. The exceptionally supple, indeed even almost easy-going, flavors aren't particularly dense but they are refreshing and vibrant before tightening up on the youthfully austere, dusty and fairly firm but not hard finish. This could use better depth so a few years of forbearance should be helpful.

An even crimson colour. The nose has a little more stuffing than the Chambolle, slightly softer and rounder, with typical strawberry notes. Tightens up a little further back on the palate, with a red fruit mix and fair persistence. Drink from 2028-2033.

2023 Chambolle Musigny Louis Boillot
£276.00 In Bond-
Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024
This cuvée contains fruit from three separate parcels of vines within Chambolle and expresses all the charm and finesse of the village. The fragrant and inviting nose delivers bright notes of red cherries, sun-warmed raspberries and a hint of cherry stone bitterness. A rounded, supple core of ripe, red-toned fruit is enlivened by a line of fresh, blood orange acidity and shaped by fine-grained tannins that bring a very slight chalkiness to the finish. The overall impression is one of carefully judged balance and finesse.

Burghound, January 2025, Score: 89-91
A lightly mentholated nose exhibits notes of mostly plum and various dark berry fruit. Much like the Cherbaudes, the middle weight flavors are caressing, round and delicious with good vibrancy on the dusty, youthfully austere and mildly tangy finish. Note that my predicted range assumes the tanginess will age out in time.

A blend of Combottes, Chardannes and Beaux Bruns. An even bright purple of medium density. As with the earlier wines the Chambolle shows an interesting mix between the floral and the fruit driven. A touch of new wood appears at the back. On the lighter side, but with elegance. Drink from 2027-2032.

2023 Gevrey Chambertin Les Evocelles Louis Boillot
£312.00 In Bond-
Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024
The steep, stony vineyard of Les Evocelles is located at the very north-western edge of Gevrey, at an altitude of between 320-380m above sea level, resulting in a cooler microclimate. The plots of vines owned by the domaine are at the very top of the hill, where limestone dominates the subsoils. The 2023 is a delightfully expressive wine with ripe notes of Morello cherry, raspberry coulis, bitter almond and a hint of white pepper spice. Plush fruit sits around lively, mineral-driven acidity, which delivers a covert touch of salinity to the wine’s core. Fine, sleek tannins encase the whole, leading to a moreish, elegant finish.
-
Neal Martin, November 2024, Score: 91-93
The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Evocelles, which has lower alcohol than other cuvées (12.5%), has an expressive, floral bouquet with vibrant red berry fruit and crushed stone aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine structure, much more depth and mineralité than the Village Cru and a long, tender finish. This is excellent.

Burghound, January 2025, Score: 89-91
Subtle but not invisible wood frames an airy and cool mix of both red and dark currant, forest floor and a hint of game character. The supple and lilting middle weight flavors also flash an almost aggressive minerality on the lingering, balanced and sneaky long finish. This could use better depth but the underlying material to do so appears to be present and overall, this is worth seeking out.

Jasper Morris MW, November 2024, Score: 90-93
Just 12.5% with a good natural acid balance. Mid purple, some fresh red berries immediately apparent on the nose. Becomes quite sensual with a moment in the glass. The oak is present but accompanies the fruit well, and this is notably more persistent than the village Gevrey. Drink from 2028-2035.
