Gevrey Chambertin 2020 | Our Autumn Picks

Gevrey Chambertin is the northernmost of the great Côte de Nuits communes, and home to some of the most revered names in Burgundy. The commune covers 450 hectares of vines, 55 of which span eight Grands Crus vineyards. It has an unequalled reputation for producing robust yet refined Pinot Noir, with an outstanding propensity for ageing.

  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024

With a viticultural history that stretches back some fourteen hundred years, Clos de Bèze is a warm vineyard site with fine, deep topsoil that is renowned for producing ripe, concentrated Pinots with considerable capacity for ageing. The 2023 sees an elegant expression of this terroir, with lifted notes of white pepper, sun-ripened raspberries and red cherries. The sweet core of ripe, rounded red fruit is supported by lively acidity, silky, fine-grained tannins and a chalky, stony grip on the finish. Long and poised, this is a wine full of verve and precision.

  • Neal Martin, November 2024, Score: 92-94

The 2023 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru doesn't quite gel on the nose like the Mazis-Chambertin at first. It gradually combines hints of finely delineated brambly red fruit, tea leaves, briar and brown spice. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannins, considering this is a Grand Cru. This is a "transparent" Pinot with light grip but a long peppery tail on the finish. Give this four or five years in bottle.

  • Burghound, January 2025, Score: 92-95

This is also firmly reduced and revealing nothing but a tinge of spiciness. Once again the caressing and seductive mouthfeel of the medium weight flavors is striking thanks to the fine-grained tannins that shape the wonderfully complex and impeccably well-balanced finale. I particularly like the inner mouth perfume that only adds to the appeal of this very classy effort.

  • Wine Advocate, January 2025, Score: 94-96

Aromas of sweet cherries and blackberries mingled with notions of clove, incense, rose petals and blood orange in an incipiently complex bouquet introduce the 2023 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru, a full-bodied, ample and perfumed wine that's pure, rich and sensual, concluding with an expansive finish.

  • Jancis Robinson, November 2024, Score: 17++

Cask sample. Mid garnet – rather dull colour actually. Rather sweaty nose and then complexity on the palate – complexity that is rare in 2023s at this stage. Quite a bit of chew and this is obviously a baby. Sweet and chewy and still just a collection of elements.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2024, Score: 93-96

A bright mid crimson purple. The nose has the class and much of the energy that one would hope for. The 2023 Chambertin Clos de Bèze is elegant with little alpine strawberries, but I would have liked just a point more concentration. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted Nov 2024.

The Drouhin Laroze plot is one of the very best in this appellation, named after the place of worship, just below Chambertin Clos de Bèze. A proportion of whole bunch vinification with the substance to cope with 80% new oak gives both extravagance and personality to the wine. The lifting “croquant” cranberry characters combine seamlessly with the mocha and freshly roasted coffee bean perfume. On the palate this is both full and compact thanks to the high proportion of clay in the soil which gives the wine a seriousness and sense of aristocratic confidence. Very long, with a lasting sensation of sweetness and alpine fruits. A rising star in the Grand Cru hierarchy.

  • Neal Martin, November 2024, Score: 93-95

The 2023 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru, matured in around 70% new oak, has a well-defined bouquet of brambly red berry fruit, tobacco and light licorice scents. It is very focused and gains intensity with aeration. Fresh and vibrant, the medium-bodied palate is smooth in texture with pliant tannins and a judicious touch of black pepper on the finish. Very classy.

  • Burghound, January 2025, Score: 90-93

Once again a deft application of wood envelops pretty and layered aromas of violet, black cherry and crushed anise. There is good if not exceptional volume to the caressing and rounded medium weight flavors that conclude in a compact, moderately austere and clearly built-to-age finale where a touch of bitter bit fruit character eventually surfaces.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2024, Score: 93-96

Fresh ruby colour. The bouquet is attractive, floral, lighter than the Lavaut-St-Jacques. There is an attractive light but fine red fruit across the palate, with more tensile strength than one would expect given the lighter concentration of fruit. Nicely put together in an understated fashion. Drink from 2031-2038.

Sitting south of the village of Gevrey heading to Morey St Denis, this Grand Cru is characterised by its generous style. The climatic conditions of 2023 lent themselves perfectly to this cuvée, with flavours of Victoria plum and sweet bramble fruit, producing a juicy and unctuous wine. It balances warming sweet flavours with a serious, earthy terroir core. The long finish makes quite the impression.

The walled Corbeaux vineyard lies in a small dip beside Mazis Chambertin Grand Cru and is famed for producing wines of finesse, which are always very affable in their youth. This year is no different, displaying aromatics of red berry fruit and delicate charred oak, while the palate has an irresistible tart cherry note that presents the perfect foil for the wine’s fine-grained tannins. Meaning ‘the crows’, Les Corbeaux was a cemetery in the Middle Ages home to a murder of these birds, but now the site produces wines that are full of life.

  • Burghound, January 2025, Score: 90-92

A fresh, even bright, nose features liqueur-like aromas of red cherry and only suggestions of earth and game. There is again good volume and richness to the caressing but punchy middle weight flavors that display good length on the lightly austere, balanced and powerful finish. This is perhaps a bit more forthcoming and less compact at this early stage than it usually is.

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2025, Score: 16.5

Mid ruby. Not a huge nose to speak of. Red cherries and strawberry. There is a floral note that keeps this quite light on its feet, but it is all quite subdued. The powdery tannins get amplified a little on the finish. (MH)

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2024, Score: 91-93

More in crimson, a less vivacious colour. This is an attractive wine with a strawberry profile, some finesse but I don’t really get the extra over and above the Gevrey Vieilles Vignes. Lower acidity too as the grapes ripened a little more fully in the walled Clos of their holding. Drink from 2030-2036.

From a selection of 100-year-old vines planted by Felix Tortochot in 1920 at the bottom of Côte St Jacques, this cuvée is a very rewarding example of village Gevrey. Gamey with a wild fruit personality, excellent breadth and volume. A lavish and full style, kept carefully in control with its fine sandy tannic fabric and wonderful old-vine length that surpasses its classification.

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2025, Score: 17

A kind of early-morning fragrance, the smell on your fingers after picking strawberries at dawn. Loam and sweet leaves and warm sweet damp hay and baby oregano leaves. Delicate and yet strong. Like all these Tortochot wines, beautiful in a kind of haunting, evocative way. (TC)

This Premier Cru vineyard lies just to the north of the Ruchottes Grand Cru and sits on slabs of fossil-rich limestone that must be broken up before new vines can be planted. The 2023 has a floral, lifted nose with notes of violet, wild herbs and sweet red cherries. The pure core of vivid, red-toned fruit has a more exotic grenadine edge and is gently shaped by silky, ripe tannins. A vibrant line of blood orange acidity and a chalky, mineral crunch on the finish speak of the limestone terroir of this vineyard.

  • Neal Martin, November 2024, Score: 91-93

The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Fonteny 1er Cru has a different profile from the La Brunelle. It features red fruit infused with scents of orange blossom and sous-bois, with a hint of menthol in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins, pastille-like purity and a gentle grip. It evinces their lower extraction ethos with a very harmonious lace-like finish. This is very promising.

  • Burghound, January 2025, Score: 91-93

A perfumed and exceptionally pretty nose combines notes of various red berries, violet and a range of spice nuances. There is fine volume to the caressing and delicious medium-bodied flavors that exude a subtle minerality that adds to the appeal of the complex, balanced and lightly austere finale. This is excellent and also worth checking out.

  • Wine Advocate, January 2025, Score: 89-91

The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Fonteny exhibits aromas of smoky berries, cherries and incense, followed by a medium-bodied, taut and compact palate that's bright and clean but lacks a little plenitude.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2024, Score: 91-93

A deep full purple colour. Darker fruit supported by some well-judged oak. Plenty of firm red fruit energy here, a light salinity behind, quite a complex wine. Just a little firm at the finish maybe, with fresh red berries returning behind. Drink from 2030-2035.

The Combe aux Moines has a long and complex history, with vines planted here perhaps as long ago as the 7th Century. The modern-day vineyard benefits from a steep, east-facing slope (part of the highly regarded Côte St Jacques) and quarry walls that form a heat-retaining amphitheatre. This means that grapes from this Premier Cru reliably achieve full ripeness and the 2023 is no exception; the nose is a hedonistic cornucopia of sun-ripened raspberry fruit, grenadine, and Morello cherries, seasoned with hints of dried wild herbs and cocoa nibs. Generous, lush and laden with sweet red fruit characters, this is a confident wine with joyful acidity and ripe, mouthcoating tannins. Already a delight.

  • Jancis Robinson, November 2024, Score: 17+

Cask sample. Transparent ruby. Some evolution on the nose already. Lots of sweet charm and depth. Some structure, drive and intensity.

The domaine has an expanse of 3 hectares of village Gevrey, covering 17 different parcels, aged between 75 and 92 years old. These old vines result in a deeply concentrated and unctuous Gevrey, which displays a depth of blackberry fruit, hints of dried herbs, and subtle toasted oak. If one wine were to embody the viticultural philosophy at Domaine Serafin, then this would be it. Made from two separate plots, which are home to vines aged from 70 to well over 100 years old, there is tremendous concentration of fruit here, with notes of cranberry, loganberry, and toasted oak coming to the fore. Meanwhile, the palate possesses a darker side where the fine-grained tannins are indicative of the wine’s ageing potential. A true representation of Gevrey Chambertin.

  • Burghound, January 2025, Score: 89-92

A more deeply pitched nose combines airy and fresh aromas of plum, red and dark currant and more forest floor and earth scents. The succulent and punchy medium-bodied flavors display notably better mid-palate concentration as the old vines are in evidence, all wrapped in an attractively textured and balanced finale. This is a fine Gevrey villages and well-worth considering.

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2025, Score: 16.5+

Concentrated mid ruby. Red cherries, strawberries with some undergrowth and earthiness. This shows lots of complexity, and there are flowers too. Showing no excess weight, this is a very fine village-level red burgundy. Long with some delicious creamy oak. (MH)

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2024, Score: 91-93

Mostly Brochon side plus Vignes Belles and Etelois. Old vines very well placed. Little deeper in colour, but with a more concentrated and more youthful fruit. Luxury cherries with some raspberry notes, slightly more tannin but in proportion to the fruit, with a really long finish. Drink from 2030-2036.

The vineyards of Mazis Chambertin sit between Clos de Bèze Grand Cru and the village of Gevrey Chambertin and are respected for making deep and powerful wines. Opening with brooding dark berry fruits, this wine swiftly shows its breadth and structure as it keeps building in muscle and depth. The impressive weight of fruit easily supports the wine’s tannic core, resulting in a cuvée with huge potential. Such a fine example of this Grand Cru.
