Hamilton Russell Chardonnay & Pinot Noir 2023

Described by Decanter as “one of the New World’s leading producers of Burgundian-style wines", Hamilton Russell is South Africa’s answer to the Côte d’Or and has put the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley on the map. From the Afrikaans for ‘heaven on earth’, this is one of the most beautiful regions in South Africa, producing equally stunning wines from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

2023 has once again produced beautifully pure and generously textured wines. From an iron and clay-rich ‘monopole’ vineyard, the estate produces a single Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, which are "classical, intellectual, long-lived wines deserving of a place in every cellar.”

Pale gold. Light, restrained nose suggests a nice, long life for this satin-textured wine. Well-mannered and creamy with strong green-fruit flavours. Just a baby now but with some richness already. An undertow and persistence. This should cellar well. Such bright fruit! Drink 2024-2032.

The 2023 Pinot Noir matured in one-third new French oak for 14 months. It has a fresh and perfumed bouquet, perhaps one of the most floral and potpourri-like that I have encountered in recent years. You could almost mistake this for a Grenache. Fresh and vibrant, the palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit, a crisp line of acidity and a touch of sour cherry on the finish. Very fine. Drink 2025-2036.

Transparent garnet. Hint of rusty nail on the nose but attractive, salty-sweet tamarind fruit on the palate and some persistence. Just a little sweet and sour without the two fully integrated yet. Fresh. I'm sure it's among South Africa's better Pinots. Drink 2026-2032.
