2024 Spätburgunders | Jean Stodden

Ahr is not that much warmer than the Mosel, but its steep slopes of slate and greywacke heat up in the sun and radiate warmth back to the vines and fruit. It is the red wine paradise of Germany, producing Pinot Noir of supple power and concentration. The Stodden family has been growing grapes in the region since 1578 and have holdings in some of the Ahr’s most important grand cru sites including Recher Herrenberg, Ahrweiler Rosenthal and Dernauer Hardtberg.

The 2024 vintage marks a return to a more classical, finely poised expression. In conversation, the winemaker welcomes this stylistic shift, noting its alignment with their long-held preference for balance over excess. The resulting wines are defined by clarity, tension, and aromatic precision, delivering detail and energy while remaining grounded in site character - a compelling case for any serious collection of Pinot Noir.

As always, there's a wonderful sleekness of expression to the fruit of Alexander Stodden's wines, and the 'JS' is a great introduction to these. There's more body and muscle compared to the Furst wines, for example, but the delicacy and purity of fruit is brilliant. Ripe red fruit - strawberries, plums and a touch of redcurrant - all held together with a bright, taught acidity. So delicious already, this will be good to go right out of the gate.

Alexander's 'village' wine. Ripe and juicy strawberries - as if you've taken your strawberries and mashed them with your fork - so fragrant and juicy and inviting. A touch of damson too, some darker red fruit coming through, with the tannins feeling a little more 'al dente' than the JS, but still perfectly resolved. If one was tempted to compare this to Burgundy, you'd maybe be in Nuits-St-Georges or Morey-St-Denis; a wine with a lovely flow but a strong mineral streak at the core too. A really smart wine.

A rich nose, quite dense but a striking purity of fruit. Rich red cherries, mirabelle plums and a strong minerality - crushed rock. The palate is incredible - you truly get the sense here of an iron fist in a velvet glove. So much power, the character of the Herrenberg site driving through, only slightly tamed by the crushed velvet tannins. An exciting wine, and one that will need some time to show its true colours.

Always the prettiest of Alexander's wines - you really get the 'Rose' in 'Rosenthal' - with really beautifual, lifted aromatics leaping from the glass. Mulchy strawberries, crushed tea rose petals, peonies and a refreshing sort of spice - like freshly cracked black pepper. The shape of the wine on the palate is very sophisticated, with wonderfully fine and well integrated tannins, that help give such a sense of grace and flow to this wine. Already very seductive, but will show itself at its best after 5 years.
