  • Robert Parker, January 1998, Score: 87

Historically, I believe 1989 will be the vintage that marks the turn-around in quality for Malescot St.-Exupery. The 1989 is overshadowed by the 1990, as well as by the vintages of the mid-nineties, but it is a very good example, and far superior to much of what was produced during the sixties, seventies, and eighties. The color is a dark ruby. The bouquet reveals scents of roasted herbs, sweet black berry and red currant fruit, earth, and spice. The wine possesses moderately high tannin and some austerity, but a sweetness in the mid-palate that comes from ripe fruit and attractive levels of glycerin. This is an elegant, soft Malescot St.-Exupery that can already be drunk. Anticipated maturity: Now-2007. Last tasted 3/97. 87/100. Date 1997-2007

Producer

Château Malescot St Exupéry

Contrary to literary illusions, this château was not named after the author of the celebrated book, Le Petit Prince. It took its name from two owners, Simon Malescot and Comte Jean-Baptiste de Saint-Exupéry. Last year Johnny discovered that the château belonged to his English family in the early20th century making it a true Goedhuis selection.

Region

Margaux

Plump, silky and seductive are the words often used to describe wines from Margaux. Because of their style, they tend to be user friendly and more approachable when young. This is in part due to its terroir which is comprised of the thinnest soil as well as the highest proportion of chunky gravel in all of the Médoc. It drains well but also is it more susceptible to vintage variation. Margaux wines tend to have the highest proportions of Merlot within the core of the Médoc further adding to their ample roundness and openness. Margaux is home to the largest number of classified growths including its namesake first growth, Château Margaux, as well as third growths, Palmer and d'Issan.
