    The 2000 Calon-Ségur still appears quite youthful on the rim. The well-defined nose offers brambly red fruit, red currant, crushed strawberry, rose petals and cedar, and some sous-bois just loitering in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with refined tannins. This has mellowed since I tasted it in London five years ago, and touches of tobacco and tart red cherries enliven the finish. I have always loved this millennial Calon-Ségur and now it is à point and drinking beautifully. Aged in 50% new oak and 50% one-year-old for 12 months (less than nowadays.) 2021-2040

    Tasted from an ex-château bottle at BI Wine Spirits Calon-Segur dinner in London. The 2000 Calon Segur is one of those wines that reminds you how great the millennial vintage could be. Now at fifteen years old, it has a brilliant, vivacious red berry nose infused with ash and cigar box aromas. The detail here is a beguiling and it just "sings" Saint Estèphe. The palate is medium-bodied with dense, firm tannin that provide a rigid backbone, but it is swathed in copious tobacco-drenched black fruit and a superb line of acidity. It finishes with a twist of bitter cherry on the finish that completes what is a deeply impressive Calon-Ségur; it might just outclass the 2005. Tasted March 2015.

    Back when my bottle reports came out in 2003, I urged extreme patience for this wine, which is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc. I projected a maturity curve of 2012-2040, but based on this tasting, I would say the wine needs another 5-6 years, so call it 2016-2040+. One of the most unyielding wines in my tastings of the 2000s, the wine still has a very healthy, deep, dark ruby color, and earthy hints of herbs, licorice, and black currants. Medium to full-bodied, the hard, elevated tannins give this wine a certain austerity, but its outstanding weight, richness, and that very classic style argue for further discipline. Forget this for another 3-4 years and drink it over the following three decades.

    A dense, traditionally crafted wine for those with patience, the 2000 Calon-Segur rivals the estate's finest wines of the last two decades, the 1995, 1988, and 1982. But be forewarned, this wine has already closed down, something totally in character with all top vintages from this estate. This blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc exhibits a plum/purple color along with gorgeous aromas of creosote intermixed with spring flowers, black cherries, cassis, licorice, and stony, liquid minerals. A powerful, tannic, full-bodied and opulent wine, it possesses considerable structure that is reasonably well-concealed by considerable glycerin and intensity. Look for it to be at its best between 2012-2040. Patience, patience, patience!

    A very fine 2000 from this property. Amazing black colour is followed by a full, frank nose with the arresting clean frankness of Lafite's. Lots of neat but not drying tannins after layers of ripe fruit. All in excellent balance with a savoury but gentle end. This is made up of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc with a quarter of the wine given malolactic in barrel - an ideal proportion perhaps? Drink 2008-2015 Deep, lively crimson with a narrow, clear rim. Big, ripe, and even a hint of coarseness on the nose. Certainly very ripe. Big, rambunctious, almost New World ripeness. I'd mistake the nose for Napa, but there is lots of acidity and chew on the finish. Lead pencils. Very slightly short. Certainly not big in weight. Finishes a little short.

    55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc. 41 hl/ha. 70% of the harvest in the grand vin. 50% new wood. 25% of the harvest in new wood. The re-arrival of Calon-Ségur among the stars ofBordeaux has been much heralded. But I have remained sceptical as I have been searching for the finesse. Here with the 2000 we finally have it. Full colour. Good rich, meaty nose. Quite structured. Very good grip. Very good tannins. Lots of depth and concentration. Splendid fruit, vigour and harmony. Fine. From 2010.

Region

Médoc

The Médoc takes its name from the Latin phrase ‘medio aquae' (between the waters)- referring to the Gironde estuary and the Atlantic Ocean. It is a long, narrow vineyard area that stretches north-west from the city of Bordeaux along the left bank of the Gironde estuary. The water masses that surround the Médoc act as a heat-regulator and provide an ideal microclimate for viticulture. The well-draining gravel soil accentuates the near perfect growing conditions for the main grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. The Médoc is the most famous red wine making region in Bordeaux and possibly the world.
