  • Goedhuis, April 2001

All of Xavier Bories 2000s are wines of great class. Like Ducru Beaucaillou, GrandPuy Lacoste has 78% cabernet sauvignon in the blend. Delightful tannin explodes on the palate and the restrained exquisitely balanced fruit hits the heights of purity.

  • Neal Martin, July 2016, Score: 95

The 2000 Château Grand Puy Lacoste is an exceptional wine from Xavier Borie. It has a brilliant nose of blackberry, crushed stone, graphite and cedar. Putting it to one side for ten to 15 minutes reveals subtle mint-like aromas that whisk you straight to Pauillac. The palate is smooth and silky, cloaking the tannic frame of this GPL so that you barely notice it. But that will stand it in good stead for the long-term, the cornerstone of all great wines from this estate. Then there is that hint of spice on the aftertaste—the show ain't over yet. Served alongside a magnum of Pichon Baron 2000, I would say that at the moment, it does not quite possess the same level of precision. However, it remains a magnificent Pauillac to cherish long-term. Tasted January 2016.

  • Robert Parker, June 2010, Score: 94

The 2000 Grand Puy Lacoste is even better than such recent vintages as 2005 and 2009. A broad, classic, large-scaled effort, it boasts a deep blue/purple color as well as tell-tale notes of creme de cassis, subtle smoke, flowers, and unsmoked tobacco. Powerful, full-bodied flavors have shed a lot of tannin, but they remain relatively youthful. This is a young adolescent, broadly flavored Pauillac with an enticing texture as well as abundant richness and fruit. It can be enjoyed now, but promises to hit its peak in five years, and last for two decades.

  • Robert Parker, April 2003, Score: 93

This large-scaled wine has a saturated ruby/purple color and a big creme de cassis nose, with a hint of licorice and tobacco. Still somewhat closed, this deep, full-bodied, luscious, muscular offering exhibits ripe tannin, loads of fruit, and tremendous purity. This is a gorgeous example of one of the most popular wines in the Medoc. Its savory tannin and low acidity suggest it should be close to its plateau of drinkability in 4-6 years. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2020+.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2001, Score: 17

Good lively, savoury tannins. Very chewy, lively and powerful. Sweeter, fuller than its stablemate Haut Batailley with distinctly pruney notes.

  • Clive Coates, June 2001

78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc. Good colour. Fine nose. Slightly austere but very rich and concentrated. Quite splendid finesse here. Real depth. Splendidly concentrated. Veryfine grip. Excellent fruit. Marvellous persistence at the end. A stunning Grand-Puy-Lacoste. Very fine plus. From 2010.

Producer

Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste

Grand Puy Lacoste sits on top of one of the steepest slopes in Pauillac, a whole 16 metres above the main flatlands! Hardly Himalayan, but the extra 16 metres of pebble-enriched soil results inparticularly excellent drainage. François-Xavier Borie is at the helm of this very impressive château which was purchased in 1978 from Monsieur Dupin.

Region

Pauillac

Due south of St Estèphe lies the appellation of Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Pauillac's renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, Pauilac's wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.
