Thanks to the generous ownership of Chanel, Ch Rauzan Segla has enjoyed a periodof massive investment in recent years. This investment has paid off. This is a winemade from low yields ( 37hl/ha ), and therfore the concentration comes from thevineyards rather than by using technology. It is one of the stars of Margaux. April 2001

  • Robert Parker, April 2003, Score: 90

While the bottled 2000 still reveals a certain sternness in addition to tough tannin, it is sweeter and more expansive and flavorful. The dark ruby/purple color is saturated and impressive. With coaxing, notes of lead pencil shavings, black currants, earth, cedar, and spice box emerge from a relatively closed, firm, medium to full-bodied wine or, as the French would say, a classic vin de garde (for long-term cellaring). Although austere, it is a classic, authoritatively flavored effort that requires patience. I would like to see sweeter tannin and more flesh built into the mid-palate, but there is no denying the classicism and purity of this 2000. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2001, Score: 18

A great success from yields as low as 37 hl/ha. The result of this - and malolactic in 70% new oak? - is a deep and healthy crimson right out to the rim of the glass. Wonderfully aromatic and lively with a lovely silky typically Margaux texture. This wine is not confected, even though there is a very deep undertow of very ripe mulberry fruit and round, appetising tannins. Bravo!

  • Clive Coates, June 2001

61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot. 37 hl/ha. 48% in the grand vin. Very good colour. Splendid nose. Full, rich and chocolaty/black cherries. Quite a big wine but the tannins are very ripe and the structure fat and old-viney. Excellent freshness. There is a lot of grip and purity here. Very intense at the end. Very Margaux. Not a bit too bulky. Potentially very silky. Really fine. From 2009.

  • Jancis Robinson, March 2010, Score: 17.5/20

Mid ruby with quite a bit of development. Warm and scented. But still reserved and without obvious distinguishing marks. Contained and far from super sweet or luscious. Refined with a dry finish. Easy to overlook as it's on the timid side. Good balance veering towards dryness on the finish. Jancis Robinson Scores 17.5/20 Drink Dates 2012- 2025

One of its followers included Thomas Jeffersonwho purchased several cases of the 1790 vintage. Over the years it was divided and sold on to various owners falling deeper and deeper into oblivion until the 1980s when its old, wooden vats were replaced with stainless steel and excellent clones of Cabernet Sauvignon replaced the tired Merlot. In 1994, the château was taken over by Chanel who have continued this drive for quality.Read less

Region

Margaux

Plump, silky and seductive are the words often used to describe wines from Margaux. Because of their style, they tend to be user friendly and more approachable when young. This is in part due to its terroir which is comprised of the thinnest soil as well as the highest proportion of chunky gravel in all of the Médoc. It drains well but also is it more susceptible to vintage variation. Margaux wines tend to have the highest proportions of Merlot within the core of the Médoc further adding to their ample roundness and openness. Margaux is home to the largest number of classified growths including its namesake first growth, Château Margaux, as well as third growths, Palmer and d'Issan.
