Not as deeply colored as the RSV. As is usually the case, this is aromatically austere though with coaxing, reveals wonderfully complex aromas of a simply incredible array of black fruits, earth, spice, crushed herbs and notes of chocolate with flavors that are supple, rich and even more powerful but not as complex as the RSV though it gets high marks for its superb detail. I particularly like the stupendously long finish that offers a surprising sensation of intense minerality. Drink: 2014-2025.

While this is showing some signs of aromatic development, it's clear that this classically styled Richebourg has a long way to go before it's ready for prime time. This still requires some coaxing before it reveals wonderfully complex aromas of a simply incredible array of black fruits, earth, spice, crushed herbs and notes of hoisin and clove that lead to focused and medium-bodied flavors that are supple, rich and impressively powerful, all wrapped in a superbly well-detailed and focused if overtly austere finish. I particularly like the almost pungent minerality and this particular vintage of DRC Riche is evolving quite slowly and it's not clear that even my suggested initial drinking window of 2019+ will see this at its best. Drink: try from 2019+.

As is often the case, this is aromatically austere though with coaxing, reveals wonderfully complex aromas of a simply incredible array of black fruits, earth, spice, crushed herbs and notes of chocolate with flavors that are supple, rich and even more powerful but not as complex or elegant as the RSV though it gets high marks for its superb detail. I particularly like the stupendously long and incredibly intense finish that offers a surprising sensation of almost pungent minerality. Drink: 2018-2035.

Co-owned by the Villaine and the Leroy/Roch families, this historic domaine in the Côtes de Nuits produces arguably the world’s greatest wine and has become the standard against which all others are judged. It is named after its flagship vineyard, the famous monopole La Romanee-Contée which was first planted by the monks from the Abbaye de Saint Vivant in the Middle Ages and came into the possession of the Prince of Conti in 1760 who kept the wines solely for his own private consumption. The vines were replanted in 1947 and before that remained untouched since pre-phylloxera days. The domaine acquired its other monopole, La Tâche in 1933 and also built up significant holdings in other grand cru vineyards over the 19th and 20th century such as Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux and Le Montrachet. Incredibly, all the wines produced by Domaine de la Romanée-Conti are from vineyards classified as Grand Cru, the highest designation available in Burgundy.Read less
