Goedhuis, April 2011, Score: 91-93
Owned, managed and produced by the Cazes family (of Lynch Bages), Ormes de Pez has a similar feel to its more distinguished relation but less dense. Deep in colour with a tightly wound core of fruit and St Estèphe tannins, this is a solid wine that provides very good value in an increasingly dear region. RK

Neal Martin, March 2011, Score: 92-94
Tasted at Lynch-Bages and the UGC, the vineyard suffered some hail damage and some parcels lost as much as 30-40% of the crop and the yield which is 44hl/ha. The Les Ormes de Pez is a blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot raised in 45% new oak. It has a very sensual, very pure bouquet with dark cherries, boysenberry, wild hedgerow, mint and a touch of vanilla, much more feminine than the wines of the past. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins on the entry, very good ripeness here and the Cabernet Sauvignon is really in harmony with the ripe Merlot. Voluminous and silky smooth towards the finish, this is an outstanding Les Ormes de Pez. Drink 2015-

Robert Parker, February 2013, Score: 88
A fleshy, attractive, up-front style of wine with plenty of sweet cherry and black currant fruit along with a hint of licorice, this wine is pure, medium-bodied and very fresh, with surprisingly low acidity for a 2010. Drink it over the next decade.

Robert Parker, May 2011, Score: 87-90
This dense purple-colored 2010 exhibits dark raspberry and blueberry fruit notes, less power and structure than its neighbor De Pez, but more finesse, elegance and fruit forwardness. This impressively endowed effort should drink nicely for 10-15 years. Drink: 2011 - 2026

Healthy crimson. Ripe and robust. Big and bold without much care for seduction. Very solid but it will take a lot of time to settle down. Drink 2022-2035

Really vibrant, with lovely notes of plum, violet and cherry preserves laced with chalky cut that stretches out the finish. Very, very solid. -J.M.
Region
St Estèphe
St Estèphe is the most northern of Médoc communal crus. Its unique terroir is made up of layers of gravel which are supported by a dense clay base. This subsoil retains water in dry seasons and works particularly well with Merlot, a largely planted variety which is used to flesh out Cabernet Sauvignon. This clay base also creates powerful, textured tannins which enable St Estèphe to stand out from the pack. Like St Julien, it is one of the four most important communal appellations of the Médoc which does not contain any first growths, despite its southern border being a stone'sthrow from Château Lafite. Nonetheless, it is home to some excellent châteaux making fine wines such as Cos d'Estournel, Montrose, Calon Ségur and Lafon Rochet.
