  • Goedhuis, April 2011, Score: 92-94

Owned and produced by the passionate and ever charming François Mitjavile of Tertre Rôteboeuf, the 2010 Roc de Cambes has similar lines to the Grand Vin with its fine delineation and notes of plump red fruit, roasted coffee and smoke. But it is more open, round and ready. RK

  • Robert Parker, February 2013, Score: 90

Consistently better than its humble appellation, this excellent wine from proprietor Jean Guyon offers up plenty of black currant fruit intermixed with cedar wood, licorice and incense in a medium to full-bodied, surprisingly concentrated and expansive style that should drink nicely for a minimum of a decade or more. There’s no need for patience with this sleeper of the vintage, given the sweetness of its tannins, attractive glycerin and fruit levels.Drink: 2013-2023

He undertook to reinvigorate the 14ha vineyard and introduced late harvesting (traditionally in this area they harvest too early, whilst the grapes are still a little under-ripe). Proportions of grapes are 65% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc. Fermentation is in temperature controlled cement vats and ageing in barriques - 50% new - for 15-18 months. The wine is full bodied, robust, rich and long lasting, yet well balanced.Read less

Region

Côtes de Bourg

Côtes de Bourg is a Bordeaux appellation surrounding the town of Bourg on the right bank of the Gironde, 20 km north-west of Bordeaux. It has a maritime climate and the vineyards close to the river are particularly well protected from frost damage. The Côtes de Bourg are characterised by the diversity and richness of their soils, composed of mainly clay and limestone soils with sand and gravel in some parts. Most of the wine produced is red wine. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are planted on clay and sandy gravel soils, while Merlot is also grown on the widespread areas of clay and limestone. Historically the region produced robust and sober wines but the wines are becoming more approachable with the introduction of more fruit driven vinification techniques. Red Côtes de Bourg are garnet in colour and are predominantly based on the Merlot grape, blended with smaller quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. They are typically earthy but fruity with blackcurrant dominating the flavour profile. They can be laid down for 6-10 years or more but can also be drunk young. A little white is made, chiefly from Ugni Blanc and Colombard grapes.
