Again made from Sangiovese Grosso, the fruit for this wine comes from southerly facing terraced vineyards. A naturally deep purple colour, this wine has a pronounced dark fruit character with hints of spice and leather. In the palate there is superb richness with an excellent central core and intensity. Dense, yet without excess, having spent 21 months in cask, this is a really lovely example of top end Chianti Classico Riserva. Drink 2017 - 2026

Castagnoli can trace its origins back to 987, once serving as a monastery. No doubt due to the beauty of its location, it later became home to a wealthy Florentine noble family. Today under the current ownership the estate consists of 13.5 ha of vineyards and 78 ha of olive groves, run by Sonia Ermini and her vineyard manager Giampaolo, from the famed Isole e Olena estate. They follow traditional techniques, using Slovenian Foudres for their Classico and French barriques for the Riserva. They use gentle fermentation up to a maximum of 28 degrees to preserve purity and refinement, which is such an important characteristic of the property's wines.Read less

Region

Chianti

For many years, Chianti was the best known wine to come from Tuscany, however its ubiquitousstraw bottle often had greater merit as a candlehholder than the contents had for drinking. Timeshave changed and these under-performers have been predominantly replaced with artisanalproducers determined to make the finest wine possible from the Sangiovese grape.
