  • Neal Martin, December 2015, Score: 91-93

A favourite of mine amongst the Grands Crus, this is a beauty. Full of raspberry and damson fruits. This is such a graceful wine, effortlessly harmonious and amazingly balanced, with subtle velvety tannins. So understated and totally at ease, this has the hallmarks of a great wine in the making. Drink 2019-2038

  • Burghound, January 2017, Score: 91

This is also aromatically restrained with its pleasingly spiced and floral-scented nose of earthy red currants. I like the attractive sense of verve to the restrained medium-bodied flavors where the mouth feel is dense but refined, all wrapped in a linear and moderately austere finale that clearly signals that at least moderate patience of 5 years or so will be required. Outstanding. 91/2022+

  • Sarah Marsh, December 2015, Score: 18.5

Floral notes on the nose. An elegant and finely textured NGS. It is lively and pure and silky. There is sweetness to the fruit, more red fruit here and a touch of dark. Lovely fine tannins. The finish is mineral and pure and long. Lovely balance. I do like this. Spot on.

He only has around 4.25 hectares of vines, therefore the quantity that he makes is particularly small. Traditionally, Burgundy domaines are renowned for being minute in size, and he is definitely amongst the smallest. In addition, he has some of the most exceptional vineyards, which read like a Who's Who list of the Côte de Nuits, many of which are located next to grand crus sites. This combination is lethal for allocations. Too little wine with too many open hands all waiting for their fair share. SInce 2011 his talented son, Sébastien, has been running the domaine.Read less

Region

Nuits Saint Georges

The second largest town after Beaune, Nuits St. Georges is known for ample wines that have textured tannins and rich fruit. Unlike other famous Côte de Nuits villages, it has no Grand Crus but does have a handful of exceptional premier cru vineyards such as Clos de l'Arlot, Les Pruliers and AuxMurgers. Its wines can be occasionally rustic, and this sets them apart from many of the more northern appellations as well as from the neighbouring Côte de Beaune whose wines (apart from Pommard) tend to be less structured and more fruit forward. This is no doubt due to a slightly increased presence of clay especially on the Primeaux-Prissey area of the appellation. Notable producers include Domaine de l'Arlot, Jean Grivot and Meo-Camuzet.
