The 2016 Corton Bressandes Grand Cru was cropped at a reasonable 22 hectoliters per hectare and this includes 80% whole-bunch fruit. It has a ripe and showy bouquet that neatly disguises the stem addition, perhaps trying a little too hard to impress at this early stage. Cassis and violet notes emerge with time and after two or three minutes it begins to gain more composure. The palate is well balanced with grainy tannin, more harmonious certainly than the Maréchaudes with a gritty, slightly disjointed yet fresh and charming finish that feels nicely focused. This is one to watch. Drink 2021-2035
A slightly riper array of deeply pitched aromas includes notes of cassis, warm earth, game and soft spice wisps. The mouth feel of the moderately more concentrated flavors is finer as well with excellent richness yet the balanced, long and mouth coating finish manages to retain a lovely sense of energy and delineation. This too should drink reasonably well young if desired. Drink 2026+
The Corton-Bressandes was cropped at a fairly low yield of 22hl/ha in 2016 and fermented with 100% whole cluster fruit. The incipiently complex bouquet offers up notes of ripe plum, spice, bitter orange, dried flowers and forest floor, followed on the palate by a full-bodied, richly structured wine with a deep core of fruit, supple tannins and a lovely sense of energy through the long and penetrating finish. The generous mid-palate of Bressandes is already expressive, and like the Maréchaudes this seems to be a relatively precocious rendition of this cuvée, which may be bottled after Christmas if it clarifies sufficiently, says de Nicolay. Light nose. Very smooth tannins after juicy fruit with a floral note. Well constructed with lots of interest and undertow. Bravo! Drink 2023-2033
The Grands Crus of Corton, a red made from Pinot Noir, and Corton Charlemagne, a white made from Chardonnay are shared between Aloxe-Corton, Ladoix Serrigny and Pernand Vergelesses. The vines for both are planted on the hillsides underneath the plateau of Corton's woodland forest. The majorityof Pinot Noir is planted in the southern and eastern sector where the soil is naturally rich with red iron clay giving additional body and power. Overall, the wines from these areas tend to be fruit forward and fleshy with a balance of round edges and fine concentration.
