  • Wine Advocate, March 2023, Score: 94

The Canalicchio di Sopra 2018 Brunello di Montalcino La Casaccia reveals medium-dark fruit and an open-knit approach with broad brushstrokes of black cherry, baked plum and spice. The alcohol content is too high at 15%, and that added power takes away from the finer nuances of the fruit. It ages in Slavonian oak for 36 months; however, the freshness is good in this wine. This is a limited release of 3,733 bottles and 200 magnums. Drink 2025 - 2040.

A dark mix of crushed rocks and flowery underbrush is lifted by nuances of dried strawberry and worn leather as the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino La Casaccia smolders up from the glass. It’s silky in feel, communicating a wonderful elegance, with ripe red and hints of blue fruits accentuated by inner violet tones. This is potent and long through the finale, with sneaky tannins, staining the palate with liquid florals, as a hint of citrus-tinged black currant slowly fades. The 2018 is a beautifully balanced Brunello of this vintage. 2025-2033

First produced in 1966, the Canalicchio di Sopra winery consists of 19 hectares under vine which lie to the north east of the Montalcino hill at approximately 300 metres altitude. The wineries grapes are grown on two very different terrains here, each with different soil types and exposures that provide different characteristics to the Brunello. The grapes from the more warmly exposed Montosoli site give the Brunello excellent richness, concentration and structure whilst those from Canalicchio provide elegance, minerality and finesse. In 2013 it was deemed necessary, due to the cooler nature of the vintage, that 60% of the grapes came from the warmer Montosoli site to add the perfect balance. One of the original 12 members of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino, Canalicchio di Sopra’s Brunello is one of the finest produced in the north east zone of Montalcino.Read less

Region

Montalcino

Located southwest of Chianti, Montalcino came into its own in the late 1880s when local producer,Biondi-Santi, discovered a Sangiovese clone in his vineyard that was darker in colour than the rest. Its colour, however, was not its only attribute. It produced a wine with notable body, structure and length. He named it ‘brunello' meaning little dark one. This grape's genetic properties along with Montalcino's relatively temperate climate combine to create a wine stylistically different to that of more northerly Chianti. They are usually released approximately 5 years after the vintage following 2 to 4 years ageing in wood. The denomination of Riserva indicates a wine usually produced with more concentrated grapes than the traditional cuvéeand requires a minimum of one additional year of ageing.Today, Montalcino has become one of the most sought after appellations in the Tuscan region.
