  • Goedhuis, December 2019

A high-class grand cru in every way. With 50% barrel matured fruit, this is a wonderfully complete example of the king of Chablis’s grands crus. Droin’s 2018 Les Clos shows extraordinary intensity and mineral aromas. A beautifully balanced wine; no one component dominates another. Refined and elegant, the palate recalls a symphony building up to a tremendous crescendo at the end. The flavours linger for a long time and what a joy that they do!

  • Antonio Galloni, January 2020, Score: 93-95

The 2018 Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru is a dense, spherical wine built on power and texture. Lemon confit, apricot, marzipan, dried flowers, chamomile all build as this creamy, voluptuous Chablis shows off its vivid personality. Bright saline notes cut through all the richness, giving the wine energy and a sense of crystalline beauty that is not easy to express with words. Today, I find the 2018 just a bit closed. I won't be surprised if it is even better from bottle.

  • Burghound, October 2019, Score: 92-95

Here too there is a discreet but still discernible dollop of wood surrounding the airy citrus, oyster shell and sea breeze-scented nose. The racy, intense and intensely mineral-driven flavors possess excellent delineation in the context of the vintage before concluding in a powerful yet refined, focused and strikingly long finish. This too is really quite impressive. Don't miss! Drink: 2028+

  • Decanter, November 2019, Score: 95

The Droins use 50% new oak on this brilliant expression of the Chablis' most famous Grand Cru, but the wine has more than enough structure to absorb it. Made with fruit from three different parcels, it's a very complete expression of the terroir, with plenty of power and muscularity, toasty wood, leesy richness and a backbone of stony minerality. • Jasper Morris MW, December 2019, Score: 93-95

Clear bright colour. The nose is very powerful without losing balance. White fruit and spice, though much more of the former. Indeed the fruit stays white all the way through and is exceptionally persistent and succulent at the end. The heady style is manageable here. Beautiful finish.

It is quite something to be the 14th generation of your family making wines in the same town since 1620. Unsurprisingly over this 400-year period, the Droins have built up a sizeable 26-hectare estate and an enviable portfolio of appellations from both Grands and Premiers Crus within the Chablis region. Benoît joined his father at the estate in 1999 at the age of 24, and for the last decade has assumed total control. During this period, he has continued the family’s respect for their fine terroir and soil but has quietly adjusted the winemaking style. The use of oak is less prevalent today than in his father Jean-Paul’s time, resulting in a greater terroir identity to the domaine’s wines and a mineral drive and edge. At the risk of testing his natural modesty, Benoît is very firmly positioning himself and the estate as one of Chablis’s greats. Regularly achieving top spot in blind tastings, in our view his brilliance is unsurpassed today.Read less

Region

Chablis

Chablis is world famous for its fine white wines produced from the Chardonnay grape. The best vineyards are perched above the winding Serein river and are south or southwest facing ensuring better ripeness in this cooler climate. It has four appellation levels. Petit Chablis is the most modest and simple followed by Chablis, which is the largest and most prominent. Premier cru Chablis is the third largest appellation and encompasses almost 40 different climats or vineyards including the famed Montée de Tonnerre, Fourchaumes and Mont de Milieu. The most noble of all Chablis are the grand crus of which there are 7 climats in total Bougros, Les Preuses, Vaudésir, Grenouilles, Valmur, Les Clos and Blanchot. The wines of Chablis have remained some of the best value in the world, particularly their superb grand crus which can easily cost 50% less than its closest revered white grand cru neighbour, Corton Charlemagne.
