  • Goedhuis, November 2020

This cuvée is a favourite amongst the Goedhuis team, a lower lying Premier Cru with a very flamboyant touch. A mass of dark wild berry fruits, this is a richly intense wine, with a firm tannic grip. Very full and very long, but will require a few years’ ageing before hitting its stride.

  • Neal Martin, December 2020, Score: 92-94

The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Aux Beaux Bruns 1er Cru, which was the first to be picked in the appellation this vintage, on September 10, has a well-defined bouquet of precise black cherry and light bilberry aromas, touches of sea spray just perceptible in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit tobacco and cracked black pepper toward the finish, making this one of the spiciest cuvées from the domaine. Good length here, but it leans toward the more austere side overall. Drink 2024 - 2042

  • Burghound, January 2021, Score: 90-92

A riper yet still agreeably fresh nose combines notes of red and dark cherry with those of earth and discreet spice wisps. There is both fine volume and richness to the caressing yet relatively powerful medium-bodied flavors that culminate in a vaguely rustic, youthfully austere and bitter cherry-inflected finish. This will require at least a few years of patience first. Drink 2029+

  • Wine Advocate, Score: (92-94)+

Always one of the most immediate, charming wines in Barthod's range, the 2019 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Aux Beaux Bruns is nonetheless especially elegant this year. Wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet berry fruit, peonies, blood orange and spices, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and enveloping, with a beautifully pure, dynamic core of fruit, exquisitely refined tannins and a long, precise finish. It's a magical Beaux Bruns in the making. William Kelley

  • Matthew Jukes, December 2020, Score: 18.5+

Always more fruit-forward on the nose, this perfumed 2019 is a lovely wine and while it doesn’t carry on the palate quite as long as the nose suggests, this persistence will come in time. Wild, fruits of the forest tones make this a heady creation and I like it enormously.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2020, Score: 91-94

Pure mid purple, first to be picked, weighing in at 13%. There is ripe fruit on show up front but then a grainy texture behind, perhaps a wood tannin. Some blood orange notes which I associate with the presence of iron oxide in the soil. Not quite in harmony today until the finish which has a deep floral character. Notable persistence. This will certainly harmonise with a little more time in barrel. 7.5 barrels made. 4 Star

Exquisitely pure, ethereal, and terroir-driven, Ghislaine’s wines also have wonderful mineral raciness. The domaine was originally created by Marcel Noëllat, Ghislaine’s maternal grandfather. After attending viticultural college in Beaune in the 1980s, she began assisting her father, Gaston Barthod, at the family domaine. Her straightforward, no-nonsense approach helped introduce a sorting table, extended lees contact, a gentle cold soak before fermentation, and domaine bottling. All this enabled greater control over the quality of fruit, texture of tannins, and purity of flavours. The results have been year upon year of magical masterpieces from Chambolle Musigny. Along with her partner Louis Boillot, today she is joined in the vineyard and cellar by their son, Clément.Read less

Region

Chambolle Musigny

The wines of Chambolle Musigny are like no other. They can be superbly delicate, yet mindblowingly complex. Of all the northern Burgundy appellations, they are the most ethereal, and as a result the most feminine. Most of the Chambolle Musigny vineyard area is encompassed in its Village and Premier Cru appellations including the robust Beaux Bruns, the splendidly mineral Le Cras and the poised yet powerful Les Amoureuses. It produces only two Grand Crus - the round and rich Bonnes Mares which it shares with Morey St. Dénis, as well as what could be described as the Stradivarius of grand crus, Musigny.
