  • Goedhuis, May 2021, Score: 93-95

55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot A very appealing representation of the success of both Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in 2020. Laden with wild bramble aromas, it coats the mouth with charm and richness. There is great depth of fruit, and the tannins are structured with an appealing granular core. Layered, composed and long.

  • Neal Martin, May 2021, Score: 93-95

The 2020 Latour-Martillac offers an enticing bouquet of black fruit infused with black olive, background citric scents lending a bit of zest. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, well-integrated oak and impressive depth. This is a very assured and confident Latour-Martillac that continues their strong run of form. Perhaps one of the dark horses of the appellation in 2020, this should be on your primeur shopping list. Drink 2027 - 2055

  • Antonio Galloni, June 2021, Score: 90-92

The 2020 Latour-Martillac is a potent, brooding wine. Graphite, crushed rocks, game, scorched earth, menthol, lavender and chocolate are all kicked up in this searingly intense Pessac-Léognan. It will be interesting to see if the 2020 softens at all. Today, it is pretty tight, and yet there is quite a bit of potential. Drink 2026 - 2040

  • James Suckling, April 2021, Score: 93-94

This really builds on the palate with blackberry, blueberry and stone aromas and flavors. Medium to full body. Creamy finish.

  • Matthew Jukes, May 2021, Score: 16+

There is some welcome fruit in this wine and this makes a change from many of the PL samples I have tasted. Fresh and dark, with the oak under control and the tannins in line, this is a decent young wine.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2021, Score: 16

Dark purple. Notably well-integrated nose. Sweet purple fruits on the palate entry and more than a hint of oak overlay. Quite chewy on the end. Tannins and fruit very separate at the moment. I wouldn't have minded a little more freshness of fruit. A little dry and chunky on the slightly sudden finish. 14% Drink 2027 – 2043

  • Wine Cellar Insider, May 2021, Score: 92-94

Smoky black cherries, dark chocolate, espresso, flowers and wet earth easily capture your focus. The wine is all about its refined elegance. Medium-bodied with beautiful symmetry, this is pure silk in texture and sweet, vibrant fruits and freshness in the finish. This is clearly a top vintage for Latour Martillac.

It has been owned by the Kressmann family since the mid nineteenth century, currently overseen by brothers Tristan and Loïc. The winemaking and viticulture team headed up by Valérie Vialard have been integral to the estate’s success over the past two decades. Its white – a barrel femented blend of Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc – is quite possibly one of the best value in the whole region, offering a quintessential example of great white Bordeaux at an extremely reasonable price. Its reds are firm and leafy, and characteristic of the Grave’s blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot.Read less

Region

Pessac-Léognan

Stretching from the rather unglamorous southern suburbs of Bordeaux, for 50 km along the left bank of the river Garonne, lies Graves. Named for its gravelly soil, a relic of Ice Age glaciers, this is the birthplace of claret, despatched from the Middle Ages onwards from the nearby quayside to England in vast quantities. It can feel as though Bordeaux is just about red wines, but some sensational white wines are produced in this area from a blend of sauvignon blanc, Semillon and, occasionally, muscadelle grapes, often fermented and aged in barrel. In particular, Domaine de Chevalier is renowned for its superbly complex whites, which continue to develop in bottle over decades. A premium appellation, Pessac-Leognan, was created in 1987 for the most prestigious terroirs within Graves. These are soils with exceptional drainage, made up of gravel terraces built up in layers over many millennia, and consequently thrive in mediocre vintages but are less likely to perform well in hotter years. These wines were appraised and graded in their own classification system in 1953 and updated in 1959, but, like the 1855 classification system, this should be regarded with caution and the wines must absolutely be assessed on their own current merits.
