  • Jancis Robinson, December 2024, Score: 18

Bright garnet. A coiled spring but an admirable one with so much fruit tightly furled within. Intense and quite lively and concentrated enough. I suspect this will be drunk (and enjoyed) long before my suggested drinking window.

  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024

Having produced wine for almost fourteen hundred years, Clos de Bèze is a warm vineyard site with fine, deep topsoil that is renowned for producing ripe, concentrated Pinots with a considerable capacity for aging. The 2023 from Nicolas Potel contains an abundance of sweet kirsch, raspberry and grenadine fruit on the nose, as well as notes of dried wild herbs, nutmeg spice and savoury smoke. Ample fruit ripeness makes for an immediately beguiling wine, which is nonetheless underpinned by the structure and power of a notable Grand Cru. Ripe, fine-grained tannins encase the red-toned fruit, while shimmering, stone-hewn acidity carries it through to a refined finish.

The emphasis remains to this day on well-sited venerable vines and viticulture and the Maison Roche de Bellene label is the superlative source of attractive, well-priced Burgundy wines. Nicolas chose the name ‘Bellene' in honour of the ancient Roman name for Beaune.Read less

Chambertin Clos de Bèze

Gevrey-Chambertin has more Grand Crus than any other appellation in Burgundy. Unusually wines from Clos de Beze may simply call themselves Chambertin, which is an indicator of the quality of these vineyards. One of the most complete of all the Grand Crus, rivalling the revered Romanee-Conti, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze wines are the pinnacle of Pinot Noir - fragrant, powerfully complex and intense.
