  • Jancis Robinson, December 2024, Score: 17.5

Lifted and lively on the nose. The whole-bunch portion really does make a difference to the structure. The acidity is much more obvious than on the Clos de Bèze. This tastes a little bit more like an experiment than a wine! Maybe it’s just a question of waiting (even) longer …

  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024

This great Grand Cru, from which the village of Gevrey Chambertin takes its name and is the background to its fame and reputation, is considered the boldest and longest keeping wine from the commune. An array of hedgerow fruits, sloes and damsons. Its overall weight and density of fruit renders a certain shyness when first tasting, but as with any great wine, it builds carefully on the palate; this explodes with layers of savoury black fruits and freshly ground coffee bean. On the finish, it offers that perfect balance between flamboyance and classy distinction. A cross between a Maserati and an Aston Martin!

A Bourguignon through and through, Nicolas’ unrivalled local network of thoroughly reliable grower-suppliers allows him to source fruit from the most sought-after parcels in the Côte. He also produces a selection of domaine wines (under Domaine de Bellene). The emphasis remains to this day on well-sited venerable vines and viticulture and the Maison Roche de Bellene label is the superlative source of attractive, well-priced Burgundy wines. Nicolas chose the name ‘Bellene' in honour of the ancient Roman name for Beaune.Read less

Region

Chambertin

Gevrey Chambertin lies well to the north of the Cote de Nuits. It has no less than 9 grand cru vineyards and the most famous of these is Chambertin. Often considered the greatest of all red Burgundies for its complexity, power and intensity, Chambertin's fine wines are unsurprisingly rare and are priced accordingly. They also need years to develop to their full potential, but are undoubtedly worth the wait.
