  • Jancis Robinson, December 2024, Score: 18

Bright crimson. Nascent on the nose but very vivid and polished on the palate. Tannin nudges in only on the end but it is very recognisably Morey. Good attack. Very lively and long.

  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, December 2024

The most muscular of the Morey St Denis Grand Crus, Clos de la Roche produces a wine of real grandeur, closer in resemblance to the Grands Crus of Gevrey Chambertin. The nose shows a brooding range of wild autumnal fruits, laced with some smoky vanilla oak characters. A tightly structured wine, showing off a feeling of power and intent. An intense mid-palate highlights the strength of its central core. This will age with the very best of the vintage.

A Bourguignon through and through, Nicolas’ unrivalled local network of thoroughly reliable grower-suppliers allows him to source fruit from the most sought-after parcels in the Côte. He also produces a selection of domaine wines (under Domaine de Bellene). The emphasis remains to this day on well-sited venerable vines and viticulture and the Maison Roche de Bellene label is the superlative source of attractive, well-priced Burgundy wines. Nicolas chose the name ‘Bellene' in honour of the ancient Roman name for Beaune.Read less

Region

Clos de la Roche

The finest and biggest Grand Cru red wine appellation in Burgundy's Morey-St-Denis, on the Côte deNuits, covering 16.9ha. Clos de la Roche's soils are rich in marl which gives more body, depth and ageing potential to its wines than most other vineyards. Wines from Clos de la Roche tend to be powerful and full bodied with black fruit aromas and flavours, developing rich, gamey characters with age.
