Sitting between Clos de La Roche and Clos de Lambrays, this fine Grand Cru has a perfume and poise that is more Chambolle than Gevry in style. Absolutely singing on the day we tasted, with its fine complex forest fruit scent. Seductive and graceful on the palate, there is a delicate subtlety, in perfect counterpoise to the volume and plump juicy fruit. The finale shows a degree of seriousness, and the mineral grip gives further dimension on the finish.

Son of the family who used to own the illustrious Domaine de la Pousse d’Or, Nicolas Potel set up his négociant label Maison Roche de Bellene in 2008. A Bourguignon through and through, Nicolas’ unrivalled local network of thoroughly reliable grower-suppliers allows him to source fruit from the most sought-after parcels in the Côte. He also produces a selection of domaine wines (under Domaine de Bellene). The emphasis remains to this day on well-sited venerable vines and viticulture and the Maison Roche de Bellene label is the superlative source of attractive, well-priced Burgundy wines. Nicolas chose the name ‘Bellene' in honour of the ancient Roman name for Beaune.Read less

Region

Clos Saint-Denis

Tucked between Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny, and sharing the same stratum of limestone, Morey-St-Denis is unfairly less celebrated than its better known neighbours. It boasts five Grand Crus, including Clos-St-Denis. Slightly lighter than Clos-de-la-Roche, Clos Saint-Denis' wines balance delicacy, finesse and wonderful Pinot fruit - the quintessential Grand Cru of Morey-St-Denis.
