Goedhuis, October 2023
Pronounced ‘Oog-a-dal’, and Gaelic for ‘a dark, mysterious place’, this whisky is named after the distillery’s principal water source, Loch Uigeadail. The peat-laden waters provide the smoky backbone of this whisky, while a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks give rich, warm flavours of winter spices, treacle tart, and honey-glazed smoky bacon. A dramatic dram, it was voted by the 120,000 + strong Ardbeg Committee as their favourite of the range. And they know their stuff.
Region
Islay
Known as ‘The Queen of the Hebrides’, Islay has long been the reigning monarch of smoke-filled single malt whisky. Indeed, many historians even believe that Scotch whisky was born on the island, with distillation arriving from Ireland via Islay in the 13th century. Despite its size, this small island is jam-packed with a number of legendary distilleries, such as Ardbeg, Laphroaig, and Lagavulin to name a few. Often described as smoky, briny, and medicinal, Islay takes its characteristic flavours from the peat fuel used during the malting stage of production.
