The Hong Kong Team Recommends
As we begin the latter half of the year, it feels imperative we ensure our wine fridges are stuffed full of goodies. To aid you in your quest for the best, we have an exciting range of wines from our favourite regions.
Our house Champagne, Paul Goerg Premier Cru Blanc de Blancs, is simply outstanding, flying under the radar. 100% Chardonnay sourced from premier cru vineyards Vertus in the Côte des Blancs is a step up in refinement and complexity and shows off the Goerg group’s skill in the cellar. London based critic Matthew Jukes waxes poetic about it with these notes: “Superbly classy and ravishingly adroit, if you are a fan of rapier-sharp Chardonnay dressed in exquisite citrus and floral finery, this wine is for you.” It is modestly priced, offering length, breadth and complexity.
We have selected five whites for the summer months, perfect for warm weather and sunny days. They’re all fresh and vibrant with a fabulous streak of mouth-watering acidity.
First up, Bernard Reverdy’s Sancerre. The Reverdy family has a knack for producing delicious Sancerre, so much so that it is a perennial Goedhuis favourite. The 2022 is a citrus-infused wine where classic flavours of apple and pear meet plump and juicy peaches
Jean-Marc Boillot’s Montagny 1er Cru Vieux Château is a Goedhuis exclusive, and we absolutely adore it. The Boillot family make a very classy Montagny, using the same winemaking techniques as they do in Puligny Montrachet. White peach and clementine give a graceful texture, with flavours of pavlova and fresh Jersey cream. Full and flavoursome and superb value.
Maison Louis Jadot is one of the most consistent negociants in Burgundy and their 2020 Puligny Montrachet is gorgeous. “Ample, open-knit with a satiny attack” William Kelley, this will delight the senses as you savour it.
Another firm Goedhuis favourite, Bruno Giacosa’s Roero Arneis. Another stellar vintage has produced a seriously delicious white that is bold, fresh and profoundly mineral. The 2022 has exquisite tension and precision, notes of citrus and a distinctive floral expression. The sandy soils of Roero give this so much elegance. We adore it for its everyday drinking pleasure.
Lastly, Eden Rift’s 2017 Estate Chardonnay is pure and elegant with beautiful poise, and now with 6 years in bottle has come into its own. There’s a beautiful line of energy to this wine, and it is drinking wonderfully now.
We’ve also chosen five brilliant reds at different price points, delivering four very different styles which are all drinking extremely well now.
If you’re seeking a good value ‘every day’ house Red Burgundy, try the superb 2020 Merucurey 1er Cru Clos du Roy, crafted by Vincent Charton who has put the appellation of Mercurey on the map with his exciting brand of juicy Côte Chalonnaise Pinot Noir. It is fresh, with juicy tannins and crystalline fruit.
Looking to Italy, their red wines really come into their own with food due to their higher acidity profile. The 2020 Rosso di Montalcino from Canalicchio di Sopra is a terrific choice for drinking now. Finesse and elegance are its signatures. Not too heavy or rich, but elegant and undeniably attractive.
We have a duo from Bordeaux’s great forgotten 2015 vintage, Ch Batailley from Pauillac and Segla, the second wine from Margaux’s increasingly excellent Ch Rauzan Segla. Batailley is always one of the great buys in Pauillac, this is bright cherry purple and scented with precise cassis fruit. Neal Martin rated gave it a 94 point score with these notes “It has a lively fresh blackberry, red cherry and violet-scented bouquet that might coerce you into thinking it was from Margaux!”. Segla by Rauzan Segla also has Neal Martin exclaiming : “On a budget? Thinking of a second wine? Look no further,” and we couldn’t agree more!
Another recent standout has been the wine from Nicolas Potel’s Maison Roche de Bellene, in particular his 2018 Chambolle Musigny Vieilles Vignes, from the Cotes de Nuits most seductive appellation. Nicolas Potel has produced a beautiful example with this fine 2018 wine, it iss all about harmony, beautifully sensual, with its rich volume and soft lacey tannins. Beautifully rewarding, this is a joy.
Should you have a craving for a gorgeous Provençal rosé, look no further than our house rosé Ch Saint Baillon, which never disappoints and continues to shine year in and year out. We couldn’t envisage a sunny day without a chilled glass of it by our side! At HK$125 a bottle it is a steal, and we are offering a special deal that any order of 12 bottles or more, it is $95 a bottle.
