  • Goedhuis, December 2022

La Brunelle is a 3 hectare site, sitting alongside the historical Rebourseau family château in the heart of the village. Bilberry and huckleberry aromas, full of deep dark fruit intensity. It tastes significantly over and above a straight village classification, with the firm central core of tannic muscle, beautifully surrounded by a great richness and fullness of fruit. The finish is tight and intense, with layers of sweet blackberry fruits. Lovely.

  • Jasper Morris MW, December 2022, Score: 88-90

Compared to immediate neighbour Aux Corvées, La Brunelle has a better draining and less heavy soil, though less important in 2021 than other recent years. A similar mid purple, but a richer darker fruit nose, less finesse. Dark red fruit behind with good acidity. Drink from 2025-2028.

The Rebourseau family moved into Gevrey when Jean-Baptiste Rebourseau married a Gevrey native, Louise Victoire Philippon, in 1861. Over the last 150 years, the estate has grown to now include an exceptional 5 hectares of Grand Cru vineyards, 1 hectare of 1er Cru and 6 hectares of village wine, managed by Jean-Baptiste’s descendants, Bénigne and Louis de Sorrel. The most recent development in the estate’s history was in 2018 when Martin and Olivier Bouygues, owners of Ch. Montrose in St Estèphe, purchased a majority interest in this fine Gevrey Chambertin domaine. These are exciting times for the two families. They made a substantial investment in new cellars, a new winery and continued attention to biodynamic viticulture, which they embraced in 2009. This means that the Rebourseau estate is destined for even greater recognition in the future. Wine maker Bénigne is adjusting the oak management programme: his father Jean preferred to use old oak for the maturation of his wines, whereas Bénigne favours a little more new oak to enhance fruit characters, and foresees that the perfect balance for the top cuvées will be 60% new oak.Read less

Region

Gevrey Chambertin

The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
