  • Neal Martin, December 2013, Score: 93-95

The 2012 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots comes from a tiny 0.17-hectare parcel of 45-year old vines. It has a very open and generous bouquet with brambly red berry fruit and rose petals - all very well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp, succulent tannins, hints of coffee bean infusing the red fruit and lending exoticism towards the finish. Punchy and ravishing: this is what you want for your Suchots.

This is also perfumed though more softly with a wonderfully spicy character to the moderately expressive nose that mixes rose petal with both red and black pinot fruit. There is more richness, volume and concentration to the mid palate of the middle weight flavors that coat the mouth with sap on the balanced, powerful and seriously long finish. There is perhaps a bit more wood at present than I personally prefer but the density is such that my range offers the benefit of the doubt that it will be successfully absorbed. Drink 2022+

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2014, Score: 17+

100% new oak. 46-year-old vines. On deep clay. This wine manages to combine both the sap and savour of Vosne on the one hand and the ripeness of the domaine on the other. A litle leathery textured but with real zip. Drink 2020-2035

Sylvain Cathiard is one of the top growers in Vosne Romanée, a region not shy of exceptional talent. He only has around 4.25 hectares of vines, therefore the quantity that he makes is particularly small. Traditionally, Burgundy domaines are renowned for being minute in size, and he is definitely amongst the smallest. In addition, he has some of the most exceptional vineyards, which read like a Who's Who list of the Côte de Nuits, many of which are located next to grand crus sites. This combination is lethal for allocations. Too little wine with too many open hands all waiting for their fair share. SInce 2011 his talented son, Sébastien, has been running the domaine.Read less

Region

Vosne Romanée

The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
