  • Goedhuis, April 2014, Score: 90-92

Certainly one of the strongest wines in Pauillac. The experience of Jean-Michel Cazes and his team really comes through here. A wine balancing deep currant fruit flavours with an intense mid-palate. There is some real sweetness of fruit on the finish and good length. Very good for 2013.

  • Neal Martin, Octaober 2016, Score: 87?

The 2013 Lynch Bages has a crisp blackberry and cedar-scented bouquet, poised and nicely focused, if simple. Nothing wrong with that. The palate is medium-bodied with good density on the entry, but I detected a green seam that nags away and upsets the finish. If that unwanted green element was not present, it would replicate the promising showing from barrel. However, it is here at the moment. Re-tasted at the property in July 2016, the bouquet was correct and there was more roundness to the texture, although there remained that slight greenness on the finish. I might not use the word "superficial" to describe this Lynch Bages. That might be too strong. But it does feel like a wine discombobulated by the challenging growing season.

  • Neal Martin, April 2014, Score: 89-91

Cropped at 31hl/ha, a blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, Jean-Charles Cazes told me that it was one of the shortest harvests because of the low yields between 1 and 12 October. The bouquet is has a pure floral bouquet that is quite Margaux-like in style. It is well defined with touches of crème de cassis and blueberry. The palate is medium-bodied with a rounded, quite succulent entry. The acidity is nicely judge and there is a cohesive finish that feels long and tender in the mouth. There is palpable linearity present here in keeping with the vintage, but there is also commendable length.

  • Decanter, April 2014, Score: 90+

Dense colour and deep cassis fruit, depth and vigour for 2013, a muscular Pauillac with a good future. Drink: 2018-2030

  • Matthew Jukes, April 2014, Score: 17+

A typically lovely, hedonistic, black cherry nose kicks off proceedings well. The palate tries to be rich and it just about succeeds. Initially structured and imposing it, however, runs out of steam on the back palate and ends a little épuisée (exhausted). This is an impressive story with a gripping first half and a predictable ending. Disappointingly short from this Château, but nice while it lasts.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2014, Score: 17+

Cassis, chocolate, fine-grained tannins that are pretty jaw-clampingly potent on the finish. Very traditionally moulded. Needs lots of time to resolve – yet doesn’t have the body for very long life. (RH)

  • Tim Atkin, May 2014, Score: 92

One of the successes of the campaign, partly because it was reasonably priced, this is a comparatively backward wine that will need time in barrel and bottle to soften. But it should reward a little patience as the tannins integrate into the fruit core. 2020-28

Region

Pauillac

Due south of St Estèphe lies the appellation of Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Pauillac's renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, Pauilac's wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.
