The 2016 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru les Pruliers has the most introverted bouquet (this despite jabbering with Etienne Grivot about his family history to allow the wine time to open in the glass!). Nevertheless, the palate is very well balanced with filigree tannin. There is a lovely saline note here, very precise and energetic with a slight chalkiness to the texture on the finish. I suspect that it will flesh out more once in bottle. Drink 2020-2035

While this isn't quite as aromatically elegant as the Roncière, it is still quite pretty with its perfumed aromas of both red and dark berries, earth and a subtle hint of humus. The rich, generously proportioned and dense medium weight plus flavors possess impressive power while delivering equally good depth and length if not quite the same minerality. This is presently very firmly structured and is a wine that clearly is going to require patience; indeed I would advise holding this for a minimum of 7 to 8 years first and 15+ will likely be necessary. Outstanding. Drink: 2031+

Bright red-ruby. At once more complex and more precise on the nose than the Roncière, offering aromas of blackberry, loganberry, elderberry, violet and dusty stone but none of the herbal or menthol notes this vineyard often displays. Sweet, ripe and pliant; fuller-bodied than the Roncière but given shape by harmonious acidity. Finishes with horizontal, fine-grained tannins and excellent persistence. A lovely showing today.

Domaine Etienne Grivot (formerly Jean Grivot)

One of the most famous names in Vosne Romanée, Domaine Grivot dates back to the nineteenth century. Over the years and marriages, the domaine grew to include vineyards in notable appellations such as Clos de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Richebourg. Etienne, the fifth generation of the family to run the estate, returned to Burgundy from work experience in California in the 1980s. He eventually took over from his father completely in 1990. Over time and through experience, Etienne has created his own style of wine, which many tasters consider to be growing in elegance. The wines remain powerful and rich, true vins de garde, which usually need several years of cellaring to soften and develop. Those patient enough to wait know that the wines of Etienne Grivot are exceptional. In 2012 his children Mathilde and Hubert joined him at the family domaine, and the three share a united vision. It is a harmonious and collaborative family team. They eschew the trend for analysing every drop of juice, and pay much more attention to the vegetative cycle of their vines. The year’s weather conditions will dictate how the team handles the grapes in the cellar far more than the complex chemical analyses which comes back from the lab.
