  • Neal Martin, September 2021, Score: 90

The 2017 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru has a simple, candied bouquet of red cherries, crushed strawberry and blood orange, a bit muddled compared to others. The palate is actually better, much fresher and more vibrant, with crisp acidity and touches of orange peel infusing the vibrant red fruit with an almost zesty finish. I would be interested to retry another bottle. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting. Drink 2024 - 2038

  • Neal Martin, January 2019, Score: 90-92

The 2017 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru was harvested from September 18 and underwent a long, two-and-a-half week maceration at a lower temperature than usual. It has a very confit-like bouquet of sweet crème de cassis and pressed violet aromas and a slightly meaty/dried blood note tucked in underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, gentle grip and good weight, though it needs more complexity to come through on the sweet, candied finish. 2021 - 2035

  • Burghound, January 2019, Score: 92-95

An elegant, pure and ultra-fresh nose displays riper aromas of various red berries with plenty of spice, earth and lavender/lilac nuances. There is both excellent volume and mid-palate sappiness to the delicious and vibrant medium weight flavors that culminate in a youthfully austere, highly complex and impressively long finish. This is terrific but note well that it's going to require the better part of 20 years to reach its full maturity. Drink 2035+

  • Wine Advocate, January 2019, Score: 94-96

One of the highlights of the Ponsot portfolio, the 2017 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru offers up a classy bouquet of cherries, wild berries, sweet spices, candied peel and rose petals, with as yet little evidence of the savory nuances that will emerge with bottle age. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, satiny and layered, with considerable depth and concentration and a lovely line of acidity that lends it energy and delineation. As winemaker Alex Abel and I tasted this wine, I reminisced about a superb recent bottle of the 1999 Chapelle-Chambertin, and he replied that the 1999 vintage of this cuvée is the inspiration behind a concerted effort to render Ponsot's Chapelle-Chambertin in a more elegant register.

Domaine Ponsot is an atypical but outstanding domaine in Morey St Denis. Their combination of late picking, destemming, and ageing in old oak barrels achieve the domaine’s distinctive style of long-lived wines. Laurent Ponsot left the domaine in 2017, and the estate is now run by his sister, Rose Marie Ponsot. Alexandre Abel has joined the team as régisseur, and together they continue to uphold these three principles of the estate. Furthermore, they are not afraid to experiment, and are always evolving the viticulture and winemaking style with small innovations. The estate has eschewed the fashion of using new oak barrels to age the wines, preferring seasoned casks which act as an “elevage” vessel rather than imparting barrel flavours. As Alexandre says “we want our wines to taste the maximum of the true fruit and terroir flavours that nature provides us with".Read less

Chapelle Chambertin

One of the nine Grand Crus vineyards within the Gevrey Chambertin area. Chapelle-Chambertin's vineyards are on gentle slopes, sheltered from the elements by woods to the north. The thin rocky soil forces the vines to work hard. The exceptional wines produced in Chapelle-Chambertin are complex, powerful and incredibly long-lasting.
