  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, February 2026

This 2005 vintage is wonderful example. Shimmering gold in colour and the result of 4 different pickings between 26th September and 10th November, its array of luscious exotic fruits, hints of barley sugar, honey and crème brûlée?combine perfectly with a twist of bitter orange make it a hedonistic delight. Twenty years old, it is in its sweet spot for drinking and a sensational reminder of why these great sweet wines really are one of the wonders of the world of wine.

  • Neal Martin, February 2026, Score: 93

The 2005 Suduiraut has an intense bouquet of lanolin, dried apricot and subtle hazelnut scents that are well defined and approaching full maturity. The palate is nicely balanced with a viscous, honeyed opened, allied with notes of marmalade, caramel and caramelised pear. Boasting lovely weight on the finish, this is ageing well. The 2005 is a Suduiraut that looks to be heading in a positive direction. Tasted at the château. Drink 2025-2045

  • Wine Advocate, February 2026, Score: 96

With 163 grams per liter of residual sugar, the 2005 Suduiraut exhales a deep, complex bouquet of exotic fruits, pineapple, apricot and spices despite a slight touch of volatile acidity. Medium to full-bodied, rich and concentrated with a stunning "rôti"—the French term for the consequence of noble rot—it’s satiny and chiseled with racy acids and a long, mineral and saline finish underlined by gastronomic bitterness. This splendid Sauternes, a blend of 97% Sémillon and 3% Sauvignon Blanc, was matured for 18 months in oak barrels (65% new and 35% one year) and was harvested in four tries between September 26 and October 17. Drink 2015-2054.

  • James Suckling, February 2026, Score: 97

What a wine for the vintage, with spices and furniture wax undertones, then dried citrus fruit. Great intensity in this, powerful stuff. Perhaps the best 2005.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2006, Score: 18+

Greenish notes in the gold. Dense and nutty on the nose. Very positive palate impact and attack. Layers of flavour - a little note of brûlée but interesting. Very well done. Really zesty acidity as well as neat and satisfying sweetness even if this is far from the sweetest wine of the vintage. Brisk and neat. Drink 2015-28.

  • Wine Spectator, April 2006, Score: 95-100

Loads of pear and honey character follow through to a full-bodied palate, with lots of spicy character and a sweet, long finish. Very, very spicy on the finish. Better than 2003, but will it ultimately be better than 2001?

Region

Sauternes

It is not an exaggeration to say that these are the greatest sweet wines in the world. They are the result of a serendipitous marriage of grape variety, location, annual weather conditions and human care and determination. The vineyards are located on the banks of the cool spring-fed Ciron river which, in autumn, flows into the warmer tidal Garonne and creates rolling evening mists which clothe the vines until the afternoon sun burns them off the following day. This cycle creates perfect conditions for the development of botrytis cinerea or noble rot, and the resulting grape juice is a super concentrated sweet, ambrosial nectar which makes the most heavenly and complex wines with extraordinary ability to age. In 1855 the wines were classified into first and second growths, with Ch d'Yquem rightly receivingits own super status of premier grand cru. Other stunning wines include Chx Sudiraut, Rieussec, Coutet and Climens. While seductively fragrant and sweet when young, if you can bear to wait, you will be amply rewarded with lusciously rich, exotically complex wine.
