  • Burghound, June 2012, Score: 89

A mild touch of reduction is not enough to stifle the otherwise elegant and cool aromas of roasted nut and citrus nuances that add breadth to the ripe orchard fruit aromas that introduce mineral-inflected and vibrant middle weight flavors that possess fine balance on the sappy, round and delicious finish. This should drink well early but age well too. Drink: 2015+.

The domaine was founded by Joseph Leflaive, who came to Burgundy in 1905. Anne-Claude Leflaive, the granddaughter of Joseph was appointed to run the domaine in 1990. A fervent proponent of biodynamic viticulture, Anne-Claude converted the domaine to biodynamics. After her untimely death in 2015, Brice de La Morandiere's, Anne-Claude's nephew and great grand son of Joseph Leflaive took on the mantle. He upholds the terroir-orientated, sustainable winemaking philosophy of the family.Read less

Region

Meursault

Meursault is the first great white wine area that one stumbles upon on leaving Beaune. Unlike other white dominated appellations in Burgundy, Meursault has no grand cru vineyards. It nonetheless has significant flair and power which make up for this deficiency. Indeed, if tasted blind some of these wines could even surpass other Burgundian grand crus. They are no fainting daisies. This may partially be due to Meursault's lower water table which enables the roots to delve deep in the soil picking up many trace minerals and which further stresses the vines. In addition, the cellars are more profound and cooler, enabling long fermentations, which increase complexity and longevity. Some interesting red wines are also made.
