  • Goedhuis, April 2014, Score: 92-94

The 2013 Mouton is a more robust style than the cool, calm and collected Lafite, but very good nevertheless. Full of spice and cassis on the nose, this is very layered in the palate with a good level of intensity and depth. A rich wine with very good volume and enticing flavours of dark chocolate and wild summer fruits. This has the characteristic freshness of the vintage on the finish. 92-94 points.

  • Neal Martin, October 2016, Score: 92

The 2013 Mouton-Rothschild has a conservative, straight-laced, tobacco-stained bouquet, nicely defined but lacking genuine depth. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, balanced with tobacco and red berry fruit, moderate depth with touches of dried herbs lining the finish. I can imagine this becoming approachable within a couple of years and yet the pedigree of the terroir percolates through with aeration. While not a great Mouton-Rothschild by any stretch of the imagination, this is a strong effort in a difficult vintage.

  • Neal Martin, April 2014, Score: 92-94

The Grand Vin is a blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc, the latter close to exceptional according to Philippe Dhalluin. It has less new oak (85%) because the new wooden vats impart their own raw woody character. It has a well-defined, classic bouquet that you might describe as "no frills". It does not have the usual Mouton flamboyance although that is not necessarily a bad thing. The palate is well balanced with clean and mineral-rich black fruit and a pleasant salty character towards the finish. Classic in style, this is a very fine Mouton with real panache.

  • Robert Parker, August 2014, Score: 91-93

The 2013 Mouton Rothschild is the best of the Medoc first-growths in this vintage. It was the smallest crop at Mouton since 1969, even smaller than their 1991. Only 45% of the crop made it into the final blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc. One of the few 2013s to reveal serious depth, it displays a dense saturated ruby/purple color along with spicy creme de cassis, licorice and forest floor characteristics. Elegant, medium-bodied and more concentrated than most of its peers, it even reveals some tannins, suggesting 2-5 years of bottle age may be needed. It should last for 15-20 years. Kudos to administrator Philippe Dhalluin.

  • Decanter, April 2014, Score: 94

Superb depth of colour, black fruits nose with spicy notes, slightly roasted coffee and bitter chocolate on the palate, Mouton's exotic hints, velvety texture, quite beautifully made. Drink: 2018-2035

  • Matthew Jukes, April 2014, Score: 17.5+

Very attractive nose with some density and a hint of richness on the palate. Smart oak detail and it’s controlled, too. The overall package on the palate is quite tense and focussed but there is some power hidden here. Not exclusively black fruited, there are lighter red notes, too – all rather suave. The nose is superb and it rather masks the lack of action on the palate at the moment. I trust it will develop further on the palate.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2014, Score: 17+

89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc. Sweet, ripe fruit. Finely tuned balance with very gentle tannins. Surprisingly gentle. They match the light body, however, and make it approachable in youth. Straightforward, fruity and digestible – though there is a length and concentration that suggests grander development awaits. • Tim Atkin, May 2014, Score: 92

Some people have identified Mouton as one of the wines of the vintage, but it didn’t taste that way to me. It’s certainly a rich wine for the vintage, with plenty of oak and stuffing (thanks to 89% Cabernet), with sweet cassis and bramble fruit, but the finish seemed a little dry and overwooded to me. Maybe it needs time. 2020-30

Mouton Rothschild is the only wine to have been elevated to First Growth status since the original classification of the Medoc in 1855. The exceptional success and status of Chateau Mouton Rothschild can largely be attributed to one man: Baron Philippe de Rothschild. He recognised the extraordinary potential of the estate and devoted his life to ensuring that potential was realised. His work is now carried on by his charismatic daughter Baroness Philippine, ably assisted by Herve Berland. This most flamboyant and glamorous estate is famous for its artistic connections, embodied in the grand vins's label, redesigned each year by such legends as Picasso, Miro and Warhol. It is also renowned for its impeccably maintained visitor-friendly estate, but its impressive and well-deserved reputation is based above all on the opulence and excellence of its wines.Read less

Region

Pauillac

Due south of St Estèphe lies the appellation of Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Pauillac's renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, Pauilac's wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.
