Antonio Galloni, January 2021, Score: 92
The 2016 Barolo is a pleasant, easygoing Barolo to drink over the next decade or so. Sweet dried cherry, leather, spice, orange peel, menthol, licorice and dried flowers are all laced together in this attractive, mid-weight Barolo from Giacosa. I suggest opening the 2016 well in advance, as it opens up beautifully with a few hours of air. This is a gorgeous wine in its peer group.

James Suckling, August 2020, Score: 94
The berry and tar character is already coming through clearly here. It shows readiness and focus. Full-bodied with firm, silky tannins and attractive orange-peel and spice notes, turning to flowers. Chewy, yet polished and pretty. This comes from the young vineyards on the estate. Drinkable now, but better after 2022.

Decanter, November 2020, Score: 92
While this offering does not reference a specific cru within Barolo, it is made from younger vines within Falletto (approximately 25 years of age) as well as those found on the southwest edge just outside Falletto’s confines. The nose expresses a captivating juxtaposition of rose, iron and scorched earth, while dense tannins clench down on the palate and need some time to relax their grip. This doesn’t manage its large frame quite as deftly as the Falletto but will satisfy those seeking a robust, rigorously structured Barolo.
Region
Piedmont
Piedmont is located in the north western corner of Italy. Though several grape varieties are prominent such as Dolcetto, Barbera and Moscato, it is Nebbiolo that reigns supreme. It produces wines that are not particularly deep in colour, yet they are perfumed, powerful and can age for many years. Due to the ethereal nature of the Nebbiolo grape and the numerous single vineyard wines, many compare top examples to grand cru Burgundies of the Côte de Nuits.Mountainous, its vineyards are cut into the hillsides forming terraces reminiscent of the Mosel Valley in Germany and the northern Rhone Valley in France. The two most notable appellations are Barolo and Barbaresco.
