  • Goedhuis, January 2019

This site is slightly warmer than Derrière chez Edouard, and its soils are a hard, poor limestone. It seems a little tighter on the nose, hiding behind some light reduction, but fleshier on the palate. The warmer fruit gives it a little more weight, and the old vine fruit gives it a creamy texture. It shows the balance of ripe/fresh/concentrated fruit that Olivier seeks in his St Aubins.

  • Neal Martin, August 2021, Score: 91+

The 2017 Saint-Aubin Clos de la Chatenière 1er Cru is showing a little too much oak on the nose, offering touches of white peach and dried honey and a slight resinous note; beeswax emerges with aeration. The palate is well balanced with a touch of tangerine peel and peach, though it is missing some mineralité and tension on the finish. Returning to it after 10 minutes, it does develop salinity, which bodes well for future development. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune. Drink 2022 - 2032

  • Neal Martin, January 2019, Score: 91-93

The 2017 Saint-Aubin Clos de la Chatenière 1er Cru comes from 1.25 hectares of vine planted in 1964. This is more primal and reduced on the nose making it difficult to read at the time of my visit. The palate is one of the most powerful from Lamy this year, impressive in terms of white with flecks of ginger on the finish. This will be difficult to resist once in bottle. 2022 - 2035

  • Decanter, October 2018, Score: 94

This four-walled clos is located mostly on hard limestone soils, where Olivier Lamy's sloping, 60-year-old parcel is located. This is less austere than some of his wines in 2017, showing more weight and concentration. The oak is nearly all used; the fruit pure, refreshing and mineral-edged. Drink 2020-2027

Region

Saint Aubin

Due west of Puligny and Chassagne lies the little, picturesque village of St. Aubin. With the neighbouring village of Gamay, it produces 2/3 white wine and 1/3 red wine over 230 hectares of vines of which over 3/4 are premier cru. It was one of the last appellations created in only 1970 but has since created an excellent reputation for good value well made Burgundy that can replicatePuligny. Some of the most expressive vineyards are En Remilly and Les Murgers des Dents de Chien.
