  • Neal Martin, January 2020, Score: 96-98

The 2018 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru comprises four barrels this year, from 60- to 80-year-old vines in the middle of the vineyard. It includes up to 40% whole bunch. It has a wonderful bouquet of mineral-rich black fruit that turns toward more red fruit with aeration, also developing a light floral note of rose petals with time. The palate is underpinned by fabulous mineralité, as if Arnaud Mortet had just ground some stone in his hand and plopped it into my glass. Quite profound. 2024 - 2060

  • Burghound, January 2020, Score: 92-94

Once again there is moderate oak influence present on the liqueur-like aromas of various dark berries, earth, spice, floral and game. The rich, full-bodied and concentrated flavors possess imposing volume and good minerality on the impressively persistent, complex and stony finale. This too is expressly built-to-age and wine that I would advise not touching for at least 10 years. Drink 2035+

  • Wine Advocate, January 2020, Score: 93-95

A wild and brooding bouquet of dark berries, cinnamon, grilled meats, black chocolate and rich soil tones introduces the 2018 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru, a full-bodied, broad and textural wine that's deep and layered, with powdery tannins and complex carnal nuances to complement its sweet core of fruit, concluding with a sapid finish. Mortet told me that this is one of the higher-pH cuvées in the cellar this year, and I suspect it will drink well comparatively early by the standards of young Mazis-Chambertin.

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2020, Score: 96-99

From 70 year old vines adjacent to Clos de Bèze, at mid slope on a band of hard limestone. This is gorgeous with a sensational and indeed noble mouthfeel, dark raspberry fruit and a whisper of black cherry but overall a magnificent full yet perfectly balanced mouthful with exceptional length. 4 barrels made but two have to be returned to the vineyard owner.

For many years, Dénis Mortet worked passionately to create one of the most sought after domaines in Burgundy. He learned about winemaking while working with his father Charles, a cousin of Charles Rousseau. From the early 1990s he built his vineyard area to almost 10 hectares dispersed throughout Gevrey Chambertin, Chambolle Musigny, Vougeot, Fixin and Marsannay. His exceptional determination and self-criticism drove him in pursuit of the holy grail of Gevrey Chambertin. Year-in and year-out, he aimed for higher and higher ideals believing that there was always better, always purer. Sadly, he has not lived to see his results. After his tragic death in 2006 at the age of just 51, his son, Arnaud, took over vineyard management and winemaking. Since then, this domaine has been soaring to ever-greater heights. In Dénis’s era the wines had been admired for their opulence, but in the past decade Arnaud has redefined the Mortet style as one that ascends towards a pinnacle of finesse and elegance. The dextrous handling of each parcel means the Fixin and Marsannay are as interesting talking points as the Lavaux St Jacques and Clos de Vougeot. The domaine has forged a reputation for organic viticulture par excellence, and the dedicated work in the vineyards is abundantly clear in the cellar. Arnaud has an astonishing gift for managing whole bunch fruit and matching new oak to his pure, crystalline wines.Read less

Region

Mazis Chambertin

Mazis-Chambertin is one of the nine Grands Crus in the Gevrey-Chambertin district on the Côte de Nuits, producing red wine from Pinot Noir. It is located on a gentle slope in the north of the Grand Cru area of Gevrey-Chambertin. The vineyard lies on a limestone subsoil, topped with brown, chalky soil. It is sheltered from the winds and hail by the woods of the Montagne de la Combe Grisard to the North West. When young these wines are bursting with strawberry and raspberry flavours, as well as violets and gamey undertones. Mazis-Chambertin is very aromatic, dark in colour and long lasting.
