  • Goedhuis, December 2020

    Everything a Grand Cru should be. Strikingly scented with generous summer fruit aromas. On the palate it starts off very restrained and graceful then slowly builds up like a symphony with an amazing array of flavours and nuance. With a touch of cinnamon spice, this is superbly controlled and brilliantly persistent.

  • Neal Martin, December 2020, Score: 93-95

    The 2019 Echézeaux Grand Cru was dense and broody on the nose, a stroppy teenager hiding in his bedroom. It only reluctantly offers blackberry, briar and pressed iris flower aromas. The palate is medium-bodied, one of the most decadent of Grivot’s 2019s in barrel. Touches of dark chocolate and black truffle enhance the persistent finish. Very saline and spicy on the aftertaste. This is a long-term Echézeaux. Drink 2026 - 2052

  • Burghound, January 2021, Score: 93-95

    Ripe, fresh and beautifully layered aromas are comprised by notes of plum, black raspberry, anise and spicy jasmine tea. There is outstanding volume to the caressing and seductive but powerful and muscular large scaled flavors that deliver first-class persistence on the moderately austere and superbly persistent finish. Like the Clos de Vougeot, this is compact and very firm and a wine that will require extended patience, but it should be well-worth the wait. Dont miss! Drink 2036+

  • Matthew Jukes, December 2020, Score: 18.5++

    With more animal undertones and less exotic fruit, this cuvée is a reality check in 2019 for Grivot and it pulls all of the fruit and ripeness back into the earth giving it a primal appeal. Long-lived and forceful on the nose and palate, this is a rather challenging wine but one that purists will inevitably embrace.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2020, Score: 94-98

    Dense dark concentrated purple, an attractive touch of oak, a sense that it wants to be detailed yet is offering the sunshine which threatens to make it more monolithic – but in fact cannot. It is just a question of needing more elevage, I think. This will show its nuances but on a richer scale than usual. Etienne Grivot offers this viewpoint: “Our Echezeaux is glamorous but sometimes lacks intelligence – not this year, it has une résonance hallucinante. 4 Star

Producer

Domaine Etienne Grivot (formerly Jean Grivot)

One of the most famous names in Vosne Romanée, Domaine Grivot dates back to the nineteenth century. Over the years and marriages, the domaine grew to include vineyards in notable appellations such as Clos de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Richebourg. Etienne, the fifth generation of the family to run the estate, returned to Burgundy from work experience in California in the 1980s. He eventually took over from his father completely in 1990. Over time and through experience, Etienne has created his own style of wine, which many tasters consider to be growing in elegance. The wines remain powerful and rich, true vins de garde, which usually need several years of cellaring to soften and develop. Those patient enough to wait know that the wines of Etienne Grivot are exceptional. In 2012 his children Mathilde and Hubert joined him at the family domaine, and the three share a united vision. It is a harmonious and collaborative family team. They eschew the trend for analysing every drop of juice, and pay much more attention to the vegetative cycle of their vines. The year’s weather conditions will dictate how the team handles the grapes in the cellar far more than the complex chemical analyses which comes back from the lab.

Region

Echézeaux

One of two Grand Crus within the Flagey-Echezeaux area right in the heart of the Cote de Nuits. Relatively large and consequently diverse for a Grand Cru, the better Echézeaux wines undoubtedly deserve this status. As always in Burgundy vineyard location and grower is critical.
