    60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot Situated at the northerly tip of the Médoc close to the Gironde estuary this is a wine which accentuates the quality of the small Cabernet Sauvignon berries in this vintage. This is full of deep dark currant flavours with added notes of graphite and eucalyptus. It is tensile and alive, the tannins provide a firm core and the nervous freshness at the end lifts the flavours. Superb in its price quality category

    La Tour de By is on a roll right now and this is another wine with superb fruit density coupled with admirable freshness and crunch on the finish. Blackberry and spice on the front palate segues into powdery tannins and perfectly balanced oak and acidity.

    Purple colour so dark, it's black at the core. Intense aroma of cassis and cedar, seems so savoury and non-sweet after tasting a line-up of Austrian Blaufränkisch. Dark and a little smoky/charry – the savoury rather than the sweet side of oak spice – then a hint of something floral as it opens. Ripe and dark-fruited on the palate. Compact but surprisingly smooth tannins. Fresh and nicely dry on the finish. (JH) 13.5%. Drink 2025 – 2030

Château La Tour de By

Vines have been grown at La Tour de By since the 16th century, and records show that the chateau was acquired by Pierre Tizon, lord of the fiefdom of By, in 1599. The tour, or tower, symbolising the estate is a former lighthouse built in the middle of the vines in 1825 to guide sailors nagivating the Gironde estuary on foggy nights. The tour, or tower, symbolising the estate is a former lighthouse built in the middle of the vines in 1825 to guide sailors nagivating the Gironde estuary on foggy nights. Marc Pagès, an agricultural engineer from Tunisia, purchased this beautiful estate in the northern Médoc in 1965 and was responsible for its rebirth. He was assisted by advice from Professor Emile Peynaud, who contributed enormously to making the most of the remarkable terroir. A tank commander in General Leclerc's 2nd armoured division that liberated Strasbourg, Marc Pagès unquestionably brought this Médoc estate up to its full potential in the four decades during which he managed it. His grandson, Frédéric Le Clerc, is now in charge of La Tour de By, which he runs according to a philosophy combining quality, precision winemaking and respect for tradition.Read less

Region

Médoc

The Médoc takes its name from the Latin phrase ‘medio aquae' (between the waters)- referring to the Gironde estuary and the Atlantic Ocean. It is a long, narrow vineyard area that stretches north-west from the city of Bordeaux along the left bank of the Gironde estuary. The water masses that surround the Médoc act as a heat-regulator and provide an ideal microclimate for viticulture. The well-draining gravel soil accentuates the near perfect growing conditions for the main grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. The Médoc is the most famous red wine making region in Bordeaux and possibly the world.
