  • Goedhuis, December 2022

The mid-slope location in the climat of Chambertin brings both warmth and freshness to the Rebourseau example of this great Grand Cru. wine. An orchestra of aromas of peony, damson, pomegranate and bilberry. A harmonious wine, with its broad rounded fruit flavours, the tannins are very fine, almost powdery sandstone in texture. The sweetness of the fruit is so very subtle, and it possesses what Louis de Surrell describes as very noble acidity in its freshness. Perfectly composed, this is a great in the making.

  • Neal Martin, January 2023, Score: 91-93

The 2021 Chambertin Grand Cru, from vines planted in 1954, has quite a floral bouquet, incense and potpourri, dark berry fruit, a hint of dark chocolate. This blossoms in the glass compared to the Clos-de-Bèze. The palate is medium-bodied with a very sweet entry, plush and quite candied in style, gentle grip with a pastille like finish. Moderate length. Drink 2025-2040.

  • Jasper Morris MW, December 2022, Score: 92-95

A denser and more youthful purple than the Clos de Bèze. This is quite rich, with some blueberry fruit mixed in. The wealth of luxury fruit is there and the sumptuousness of the finish, though acidity is present it is swamped by the level of fruit. Seamless and sensual. How noble? Drink from 2028-2036.

The Rebourseau family moved into Gevrey when Jean-Baptiste Rebourseau married a Gevrey native, Louise Victoire Philippon, in 1861. Over the last 150 years, the estate has grown to now include an exceptional 5 hectares of Grand Cru vineyards, 1 hectare of 1er Cru and 6 hectares of village wine, managed by Jean-Baptiste’s descendants, Bénigne and Louis de Sorrel. The most recent development in the estate’s history was in 2018 when Martin and Olivier Bouygues, owners of Ch. Montrose in St Estèphe, purchased a majority interest in this fine Gevrey Chambertin domaine. These are exciting times for the two families. They made a substantial investment in new cellars, a new winery and continued attention to biodynamic viticulture, which they embraced in 2009. This means that the Rebourseau estate is destined for even greater recognition in the future. Wine maker Bénigne is adjusting the oak management programme: his father Jean preferred to use old oak for the maturation of his wines, whereas Bénigne favours a little more new oak to enhance fruit characters, and foresees that the perfect balance for the top cuvées will be 60% new oak.Read less

Region

Chambertin

Gevrey Chambertin lies well to the north of the Cote de Nuits. It has no less than 9 grand cru vineyards and the most famous of these is Chambertin. Often considered the greatest of all red Burgundies for its complexity, power and intensity, Chambertin's fine wines are unsurprisingly rare and are priced accordingly. They also need years to develop to their full potential, but are undoubtedly worth the wait.
