  • Goedhuis, December 2022

Les Rouges is perched above Echézeaux Grand Cru on poor pebbly soil and is not the easiest of vineyards to work, but Mathilde Grivot says she loves it for its femininity and charm. The 2021 is such a fine expression, rounded gentle and easy, with flavours of tayberry and raspberry. The tannins have a velvet-like texture, very supple and the delicious sweetness is the lasting memory.

  • Neal Martin, January 2023, Score: 92-94

The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Les Rouges 1er Cru has a perfumed bouquet with dried rose petal infused red fruit, well defined like the Les Chaumes. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannins, lively and tensile very edgy with blood orange notes towards the finish. Don't under-estimate this Vosne-Romanée.

  • Burghound, January 2023, Score: 90-93

There is a touch of herbal tea character to the ultra-fresh and very spicy nose of various red berries, anise and jasmine tea. There is a bit more volume to the relatively generously proportioned mediumbodied flavors that exude more evident minerality on the succulent yet youthfully austere finish that exhibits excellent length. This slightly more structured effort should be approachable after 6 to 8 years of keeping. Drink 2033+

  • Matthew Jukes, January 2023, Score: 18+

There is much more grip and tension than found in many of the reds in 2021, but it must be said that it works. There is style here and enough red fruit to carry the tannin and acidity, making it a classy and ethereal wine with a very successful future ahead of it.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2022, Score: 90-93

A pretty mid purple with a pinkish touch. Lightly perfumed, little red fruits. Elegant and quite nuanced. A touch of menthol in this, less volume than the Chaumes, some redcurrant notes in the fruit. Not the density of some but certainly the persistence. Drink from 2026-2032.

Producer

Domaine Etienne Grivot (formerly Jean Grivot)

One of the most famous names in Vosne Romanée, Domaine Grivot dates back to the nineteenth century. Over the years and marriages, the domaine grew to include vineyards in notable appellations such as Clos de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Richebourg. Etienne, the fifth generation of the family to run the estate, returned to Burgundy from work experience in California in the 1980s. He eventually took over from his father completely in 1990. Over time and through experience, Etienne has created his own style of wine, which many tasters consider to be growing in elegance. The wines remain powerful and rich, true vins de garde, which usually need several years of cellaring to soften and develop. Those patient enough to wait know that the wines of Etienne Grivot are exceptional. In 2012 his children Mathilde and Hubert joined him at the family domaine, and the three share a united vision. It is a harmonious and collaborative family team. They eschew the trend for analysing every drop of juice, and pay much more attention to the vegetative cycle of their vines. The year’s weather conditions will dictate how the team handles the grapes in the cellar far more than the complex chemical analyses which comes back from the lab.

Region

Vosne Romanée

The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
