  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, October 2025

Juicy nose chock full of lovely red fruit, warm but in no way cooked. Gently spicy, with a touch of the garrigue and leather. As ever, this is a lot of wine for the money, and essentially a declassified Chateauneuf. Brambles and plums on the palate, with some clove and vanilla. The tannins melt, with a long almost creamy finish. Delicious.

  • Wine Advocate, October 2025, Score: 92

The 2023 Cotes du Rhone Coudoulet de Beaucastel reveals aromas of dark berries, flowers, spices and garrigue, followed by a medium- to full-bodied, round and charming palate framed by velvety tannins. It concludes with a long, fruity and gourmand finish. This is a great vintage for Coudoulet—a blend of 30% Mourvèdre, 30% Grenache Noir, 30% Syrah and 10% Cinsault. Drink date: 2025-2035.

  • Jeb Dunnuck, October 2024, Score: 90-92

A blend of four varieties, 30% each of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre, with 10% Cinsault, the 2023 Côtes Du Rhône Coudoulet De Beaucastel should easily be an outstanding wine, and readers could do far worse than to have a case of this in the cellar. Black raspberries, ripe cherries, flowery incense, and pepper all define the aromatics, and it's medium-bodied, has a supple, elegant, mouthfeel, and terrific purity.

Château de Beaucastel, the flagship estate of the Perrin family and masters on the Southern Rhône, makes benchmark Châteauneuf. The best vintages here can age into legendary wines, and an increasing tendency to elegance in the winemaking style of recent years has not gone unnoticed. The Beaucastel vines are all in one large 110 hectare block at the northern end of the Châteauneuf du Pape appellation. The plot contains all the archetypal soil types of the region: sand, clay and limestone, with pudding stone pebbles on the surface. Their Coudoulet vines lie just beyond the northern boundary and convey much of the typicity of a Châteauneuf in a more accessible format. The estate famously grows all thirteen varieties permitted within the Châteauneuf appellation. Beyond the Beaucastel estate, the Perrin family have built up a comprehensive portfolio of wines across the Southern Rhône appellations including Gigondas, Vacqueyras and Vinsobres.Read less

Region

Côtes du Rhône

The largest of the Rhône appellations, it is also has the most breadth and variety in its styles. Its hierarchy ranges from the fruity and ultra light Côtes du Rhône Primeur (made by carbonic maceration), to the standard Côtes du Rhône, to the more concentrated versions of Côtes du Rhône Villages and Côtes du Rhône Villages with 1 of 16 specified villages attached to the label. It is generally known for its fruit forwardness and easy drinkability. Most of the vineyards are found in the southern valley whose main variety is Grenache; however, there are smaller areas in the northern valley that uniquely grow Syrah, therefore producing a very different wine.
