2019 brings a powerful richer style of Phenomena to the fore in line with the character of the vintage. Concentrated dark plum, blood orange and blackberry flavours mingle with red currant and cranberry. Crushed stone and spice add an extra dimension to create an exhilarating Riserva. Although still very youthful this is by far the most complex Phenomena that we have encountered in several vintages and we anticipate that it will have a long life ahead of it.

  • Eric Guido, Vinous, November 2024, Score: 94+

The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Phenomena takes its time to blossom in the glass. Swirling unlocks depths of crushed blackberry, dried orange peels and cedary spice accentuated by hints of sweet lavender. It's surprisingly fresh and cool-toned in feel, sweeping across the palate with racy red berry fruit scents and mineral tones as tension builds through a saturation of primary concentration toward the close. Long, staining and nearly chewy in feel, the 2019 tapers off with a licorice tinge, sweet tannins and a touch of sour citrus. I suspect that great things will come with patience.

  • Jancis Robinson, October 2024, Score: 18

Maturing mid ruby with orange tinges. A little savoury and subdued but with a clear minerally streak. A core of pure sour-cherry and raspberry fruit with bags of gorgeous gravelly tannins. Fluid and firm at the same time. (WS)

The 2019 Sesti Phenomena is a stunning wine. It offers delicate but enticing aromas of violet, cedar, underbrush, graphite and eucalyptus while the firm, full-bodied palate features succulent red cherry, red plum, cake spice, licorice and chewing tobacco. Firm, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity provide support. Showing the austere nature of the vintage, while this is already tempting it has years to go so hold for even more complexity. Drink 2029–2039.

  • Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, January 2025, Score: 92

The Sesti 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Phenomena is savory and rich with cherry compote, mulberry spice and sweet-smelling rose. In fact, that floral component becomes more intense the longer the wine stays in the glass. It is not too long in terms of mouthfeel, but it does deliver a good dollop of that typical Brunello intensity. Only 5,000 bottles were made.

Castello di Argiano Sesti, owned by father and daughter team Giuseppe and Elisa, is located in Montalcino and their vineyards are grown on the southern slopes of Montalcino (home of some of the greatest Brunello). Giuseppe (‘Giugi’) Sesti, studied fresco painting for 8 years before turning to ancient astronomy and lunisolar calendars. In 1975, he moved to Montalcino to find a quieter life and to explore his other interests including opera. He planted his own vines in 1991 after years of helping neighbouring winemakers with their harvests and wines. Today, he is considered as one of the leading winemakers of the region – a tremendous feat in such a short span of time. Giuseppe and Elisa follow organic and biodynamic approaches both in the vineyards and in the cellar. Fleshy and immediately appealing, his wines might be mistaken for top Right Bank Bordeaux – which is probably not such a bad thing.Read less

Region

Montalcino

Located southwest of Chianti, Montalcino came into its own in the late 1880s when local producer,Biondi-Santi, discovered a Sangiovese clone in his vineyard that was darker in colour than the rest. Its colour, however, was not its only attribute. It produced a wine with notable body, structure and length. He named it ‘brunello' meaning little dark one. This grape's genetic properties along with Montalcino's relatively temperate climate combine to create a wine stylistically different to that of more northerly Chianti. They are usually released approximately 5 years after the vintage following 2 to 4 years ageing in wood. The denomination of Riserva indicates a wine usually produced with more concentrated grapes than the traditional cuvéeand requires a minimum of one additional year of ageing.Today, Montalcino has become one of the most sought after appellations in the Tuscan region.
